Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Moonshine Yarrow requires at least 6 to 8 hours of full, direct sun to maintain its signature silver foliage and tight, upright habit. If planted in too much shade, the stems tend to flop over and the bright yellow flower clusters will be much smaller.
  • Soil: This plant thrives in lean, well drained soil that is almost gritty in texture. If you have heavy clay, mix in a few handfuls of compost or fine gravel at planting time to improve drainage, as "wet feet" during winter is the quickest way to lose this perennial.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water your Moonshine Yarrow twice a week to help the root system expand into the surrounding soil. Once the plant is established, it is exceptionally drought tolerant and usually only needs supplemental water during extreme heat waves. Overwatering or inconsistent moisture can lead to root rot or weak, leggy growth that lacks the characteristic silvery sheen.

Pruning Tips

Since this perennial blooms on new growth, you should cut the spent flower stalks down to the basal foliage as soon as they begin to fade in midsummer. This "deadheading" encourages the plant to send up a second flush of blooms and keeps the silver mound looking tidy. Think of it like a mid-season haircut that prevents the plant from wasting energy on seed production.

Fertilizer Needs

Use a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer once in early spring as new growth emerges. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer because this promotes soft, lush growth that is easily damaged by the first frost. Most of the time, a thin layer of compost spread around the base of the plant provides all the nutrients it needs without causing it to grow too fast and lose its shape.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Yarrow should be planted in full sun and is tolerant to hot humid summers. It can easily tolerate poor soil conditions, although it thrives in well-drained, lean, dry to medium-wet soil. To use in heavy clays and wet, rich, fertile soils, plant them in a raised bed. This hearty flower only needs occasional watering once it's established, making it a great choice for drought-tolerant and xeriscape landscapes. Considering how many butterflies Yarrow attracts, it's refreshing that these little perennials are deer and rabbit resistant! An easy-to-grow, carefree, heat-loving bloomer that will rebloom if you cut or deadhead the first round of blooms.
