Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This hibiscus thrives in full sun, needing at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily to produce its deep burgundy foliage and large blooms. While it can handle partial shade, you will notice the leaves turning more green than purple and a significant drop in flower production.
  • Soil: It prefers rich, moist soil that mimics a swampy environment but can adapt to garden soil with organic compost mixed in. If you have heavy clay, plant it in a slight mound to ensure the crown doesn't rot during winter dormancy while still keeping the roots hydrated.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, keep the soil consistently moist like a wrung out sponge to help the root system expand. Once established, MoonShadow™ is quite resilient, but inconsistent watering will cause the flower buds to drop before they open. During the heat of summer, plan to water deeply twice a week to maintain the lush foliage and prevent the plant from flagging.

Pruning Tips

Since this hardy hibiscus dies back to the ground each winter and blooms on new wood, you should cut the old stalks down to about 4 inches in early spring. This "clean slate" approach allows the plant to focus all its energy on the vigorous new stems that emerge late in the season. Don't worry if you don't see growth until late May or June; these are "late sleepers" that wait for the soil to truly warm up before waking.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early summer just as the new shoots begin to rapidly gain height. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this encourages tender new growth that won't have time to harden off before the first frost. A single application of a bloom boosting formula in midsummer can also help maximize the size and quantity of those cherry red flowers.

MoonShadow™ Morello Hardy Hibiscus (Hibiscus moscheutos 'G19163') is a gorgeous new variety of perennial Hibiscus with loads of improvements over standard varieties! Starting with the enormous juicy cherry-red petals that are highly saturated, intense color from center to edge! These huge blooms with their overlapping petals form wide open trumpets and each features the pale, buttery yellow stamen that you'd expect from the Hibiscus flower family! Then add profuse flowering, reduced viable seeds, and insect damage resistance!

Morello Hardy Hibiscus is backed by a four-foot-tall and wide mound of dark mocha-brown to dark violet foliage that can also be deep dark green depending on sunlight, temperature, and nutrition availability. The color play is incredible! The blooms arrive in huge clusters all summer and into autumn, attracting droves of bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds!

MoonShadow™ are improved versions of the classic tropical-looking woody perennial plants that die back to the ground each fall. Once established, they tolerate a wide range of soil types, moisture availability, and climates, thriving in USDA growing zones 5 through 9! Typically, Hibiscus is a bit slow to get growing in the spring, but Morello kicks the season off a bit earlier, and you get high-impact flowers and foliage growing from the ground to full size in a single growing season! Plus, this new and improved variety has shown significant resistance to Japanese Beetles!

Planting and Application:

Hardy Hibiscus can tolerate Rock Garden conditions and look great as specimen plantings, garden anchors and as focal points in your perennial and Rose gardens! Create vivid low privacy and screening around the backyard seating areas, spice up poolside plantings, or add juicy color around your porch and patio, so you feel like you've been enveloped in exotic juicy color!

MoonShadow™ Morello is an incredibly vivid, intensely colored bloom that stands out in any landscape or garden bed! Plant in pollinator gardens, perennial borders and mix-shrub borders for an eye-catching burst of color! Use in rows or groupings to really draw the attention of everyone as a backdrop to a cottage border or spice up a front yard garden!

Prune all stems to the ground in late fall after the frost kills off the foliage and remove all debris from the area.

  • Full Sun
  • Moderate Moisture & Almost Any Well-Drained Soil
  • Shown Japanese Beetle Resistance
  • Low-Maintenance & Easy Care
  • Prune to Ground in Autumn
