Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Plant in full sun for at least 6 to 8 hours each day to ensure the most vibrant flower color and strongest stems. Partial shade is acceptable in very hot climates, but it often leads to fewer blooms and leggy growth that might require staking.
  • Soil: These plants love "wet feet" and thrive in rich, organic soil that holds moisture well. If you have sandy soil, mix in plenty of compost or peat moss to help the ground retain water like a sponge.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, water your hibiscus every few days to keep the soil consistently moist while the roots establish. Mature plants are very thirsty and require a deep soaking twice a week during the summer heat. If the soil dries out too much, the plant will drop its flower buds to protect itself from stress.

Pruning Tips

Hardy Hibiscus bloom on new wood and die back to the ground entirely during the winter. In late fall or early spring, cut the old, woody stalks down to about 4 inches above the soil line to make way for new growth. This plant is a late sleeper and may not sprout until the ground is very warm, so do not worry if it stays dormant longer than your other perennials.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer in late spring once you see the first green shoots poking out of the ground. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers in the late summer or fall. This prevents the plant from producing tender new growth that would be easily damaged by the first frost of the season.

Then add profuse flowering, reduced viable seeds, and insect damage resistance!

Need more to set this unique plant apart from the rest? The Carmine Hardy Hibiscus is backed by a four-foot-tall and wide mound of dark mocha-brown to dark violet foliage that can also be deep dark green depending on sunlight, temperature, and nutrition availability! The color play is incredible! The blooms arrive in huge clusters, lasting all summer and well into autumn, attracting droves of bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds!

Typically, Hibiscus can be a bit slow to get growing in the spring, but Carmine kicks the season off a bit earlier, and you get high-impact flowers and foliage growing from the ground to full size in a single growing season! MoonShadow™ Hibiscus are improved versions of the exotic-looking woody perennial plants that die back to the ground in late autumn. Hardy Hibiscus needs full sun locations for the best color. Plant in enriched and well-drained soils for the best results, however once established, they can be very drought tolerant. Prune all stems to the ground in late fall after the frost kills off the foliage and remove all debris from the area.

  • Full Sun

  • Shown Japanese Beetle Resistance
  • Low-Maintenance & Easy Care
  • Prune to Ground in Autumn
