The Compact Amur Maple (Acer ginnala 'Compactum') is an ornamental Maple shrub with a small form that brings all your favorite features of a Maple in a compact package. Your Compact Amur Maple has a compact, rounded form that fills out nicely with dark green, 3-lobed leaves.

Clusters of small, pale yellow flowers will appear in spring to tease your senses with their subtle, sweet fragrance and bring in the butterflies. Double samara seedpods develop soon after and shift from green into brown for mid-summer. The Compact Amur Maple grows naturally as a multi-stemmed, dense, and compact shrub.

As delightful as all these features are, however, you'll see the true value of this diminutive shrub when it displays its autumn color! Your Compact Amur Maple will burst forth in shades of orange and red that seem to burn like tiny beacons amid other fall plantings!

Landscape Application:

The Amur Maple Shrub would make an excellent accent plant for your foundation or among mixed shrub borders! A dramatic hedge along an outbuilding or your property line as a screen or colorful privacy row!

The size of this deciduous plant is even great as a container plant for your patio! Try "limbing up" your shrub by pruning it into a single or multi-stemmed small tree. This will create a stunning small specimen for your front and back yard garden vignettes, raised berms, and urn focal points!

  • Lacy 3-Lobed Leaves
  • Dense Multi-Stemmed Shrub
  • Bright Orange & Red Fall Color
  • Fragrant Little Flowers
  • Hedges, Container Plants & Small Scale Specimens

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Your Compact Amur Maple enjoys well-drained soils and full sun, but will tolerate some shade - especially in hotter climates. It's reasonably drought-tolerant once established but you should water new trees consistently and not let them dry out, that way your Maple established a deep root system. Prune in late winter or early spring to tidy up and shape your shrub.

  • Full Sun & Highly Adaptable
  • Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate Moisture Needs
  • Prune In Spring
  • Very Easy To Grow!

You can expect your Compact Amur Maple to have a 60-year lifespan, so whatever form you choose to grow your Maple in, you're sure to enjoy it for a very long time. Order this Maple bush at NatureHills.com today!

The husband wanted a huge Maple in our small yard. I got the Compact Amur Maple instead. I was going to train it into a tree but he likes it in it's natural state! Too funny. I love it though. I haven't seen one in our neighborhood either which makes it more special.

Hi Mary,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful story about the Compact Amur Maple Shrub! We love hearing how your shrub struck the perfect balance between your husband’s vision and your yard’s space. It’s great that you’re enjoying the natural charm of this special plant, especially since it’s a unique sight in your neighborhood. Compact Amur Maples really do bring such beauty and interest to smaller yards—and growing it as a shrub allows for less maintenance while still showcasing vibrant fall colors.

If you ever decide to experiment with gentle shaping, a little selective pruning can help enhance its form without compromising its natural look. Also, be sure to keep it well-watered during dry spells and monitor for stress to keep it thriving for years to come.

Thanks again for your thoughtful review – your shared experience helps fellow gardeners imagine new possibilities for their spaces!

Excellent Small Tree

I bought this tree from Nature Hills about 10 years ago. It was a bare root 3ft. stick. I planted it and decided to make it into a small single stem tree. It's a fast grower. This tree has thick branches that nobody can see through. Beautiful red, fall color - it is fantastic. The Robins love to make their nests in it. The only drawback is that the seeds are excessive when they drop in the fall and unless you clean them all up, you'll have about 20,000 seedlings! The height is about 20 ft. and I love this shrub/tree in spite of all the seeds!

Dear Grannygardener,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with your Compact Amur Maple Shrub! We're delighted to hear how beautifully it has grown over the past 10 years and that it’s become such a vibrant, bird-friendly part of your garden. Your detailed description really brings to life the journey of nurturing this tree from a bare root stick to a 20-foot tall beauty with warm fall coloration — truly a rewarding gardening success!

We appreciate you mentioning the seed drop challenge. The prolific seeding behavior can indeed result in numerous seedlings, which for many gardeners is double-edged—exciting, but labor-intensive. A helpful tip to manage excess seedlings is to rake and mulch the area under the tree after seeds fall to suppress unwanted new arrivals, or applying a thick layer of organic mulch can discourage sprouting. Alternatively, regularly harvesting any seedlings as young plants can also make controlling their spread more manageable, or even give you an opportunity to share free young trees with friends or local plant swaps!

We’re so glad that despite this minor drawback, the Amur Maple continues to provide aesthetic joy and habitat for your neighborhood Robins — a true testament to the harmonious garden you’ve cultivated.

Please feel free to reach out anytime if you have questions or want to explore solutions for seedling control or pruning tips for maintaining that perfect single stem form you’ve shaped.

Dear Grannygardener, N.,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with your Compact Amur Maple Shrub! It’s heartwarming to hear how your 3-foot bare root tree has flourished into a thriving, beautiful small tree over the last decade. The fact that robins choose it as their nesting spot really speaks to the creature-friendly charm your tree has developed—truly nature’s sign of success!

We appreciate you mentioning both the fast growth and the thick branches, as well as the stunning red fall color—these traits make the Amur Maple such a favored choice. Your note about the abundant seeds is a helpful insight for other growers, too. To help manage those seedlings, some gentle raking in the fall before the seeds take root and mulching around the base can reduce unwanted volunteers. Another inexpensive option is to use seed-eating birds or squirrels to help minimize seed quantity naturally!

Thank you again for your thoughtful review and all the love you’ve given this lovely tree for 10 years. If you have any more questions or want tips for caring over the coming seasons, we're always here to help.

Dense shrub

My compact Amur Maple is the thickest shrub I have. So dense, it makes you want to try and see through it. The denseness of the leaves really adds to the fall colors.

Dear Deke,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with your Compact Amur Maple shrub! We're delighted to hear that its dense foliage has become such a standout feature in your garden, especially as it enhances the fall colors—that vivid display is truly one of this shrub’s greatest charms. If you ever want to maintain or encourage even more vibrant color and healthy growth, regular pruning just after leaf drop and some light fertilizing in early spring can really make a difference.

If you have any questions on care or would like tips for complementing your maple with other plants, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We love helping bring more beauty and life into gardens like yours!
