Lacy, gorgeous and fragrant Persian Lilac (Syringa x chinensis 'Saugeana') is a wide-spreading deciduous, ornamental shrub with prolific, fragrant flowers! These spreading, graceful shrubs with arching branches. Its dark green foliage provides an elegant backdrop for its 2 to 3-inch long, pale pinkish lavender panicles of flowers that appear in spring.

The blooms are so fragrant that your nose will likely pick up the scent of the fragrant flowers from around the corner of your home! Then you'll see all the butterflies and hummingbirds that are swarming these bushes! The dense branching is perfect for birds to nest in, sheltered by the foliage that looks gorgeous all growing season until frost.

Introduced in 1614, the Persian Lilac still enjoys an honored place of distinction in many landscapes. It will reach 4 to 8 feet in height with a 5 to 10 feet spread. Persian Lilac is highly attractive to butterflies and other pollinators, but not attractive to deer, who seem to avoid it unless especially desperate. Incredibly hardy and cold-hardy throughout USDA growing zones 3-7, there is little that bothers these wonderful flowering shrubs!

Planting and Application:

The Persian Lilac is a reasonably compact Lilac and it can be pruned to fit into a smaller garden as a standalone accent or as a phenomenal shrub border. It would be perfect as a foundation or flowering hedge in your yard that screens an eyesore and perfumes large areas of your property. Imagine the outdoor rooms and seating areas you can create with these fragrant living fences!

Create a solid screen by planting them six feet apart. Vary the spacing to ten feet apart for a loose, natural look. You'll measure from the center of one to the center of the next. Use these glorious blooming shrubs in a wide double row to establish a lovely allée.

Lilacs are a privacy screen with big benefits! Use a series of staggered rows to fill a wide, open area with magnificent spring blooms while blocking noise, prying eyes and slowing wind. You'll love the billowy, easy-breeze sense of privacy all season long. Create a mixed Lilac border for varied blooms and extended bloom times all spring!

Add a few to your cottage border, behind a perennial garden and are must-haves to include in the cutting garden for plenty of fresh materials. Don't miss out on the dazzling beauty and alluring scent of the outstanding garden accents. Don't go another spring without a prolific source of fabulous Lilac blooms.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Flowering in full sun the very best, plant Lilacs in a well-ventilated area with a love of morning sun to dry the leaves. However this Lilac also flowers in partial shade, only you'll see fewer flowers and smaller blooms. Plant Lilacs in well-drained enriched soil and give new transplants consistent moisture during their first year. After, these shrubs only need supplemental moisture in times of need and appreciate a 3-4 inch layer of mulch over your soil's surface to keep moisture in with more consistency.

This shrub does not need to be pruned if you do not want to, but the Persian Lilac is a fast-growing shrub and is quite adaptable to pruning if you so desire. It flowers on old wood, so if you need to prune, you should wait until immediately after it's finished flowering.

  • Full Sun & Part Shade
  • Moderate Moisture & Mulched Beds
  • Enriched Well-Drained Soil Types
  • Prune Immediately After Flowering
  • Hardy, Cold-Tolerant & Deer Resistant

For a carefree, free flowering shrub, you can't do better than the Persian Lilac! Hurry and order these highly sought-after varieties today as soon as you see them available because they won't be in stock at NatureHills.com for long!
