Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This lilac performs best in at least 6 hours of direct sun daily. While it can survive in partial shade, you will notice fewer of those deep purple blooms and a higher risk of powdery mildew if it does not get enough light.
  • Soil: Aim for rich, well drained soil that is neutral to slightly alkaline. If you have heavy clay, mix in some organic compost to improve drainage, or plant in a slight mound to keep the roots from sitting in water.

Watering Requirements

During the first two years, water your Agincourt Beauty deeply twice a week to help the root system reach deep into the soil. Once established, this lilac is quite drought tolerant, but inconsistent watering during a dry summer can lead to smaller flower buds for the following spring. Aim for a "deep soak" rather than a light sprinkle to ensure the entire root ball stays hydrated.

Pruning Tips

Since lilacs bloom on old wood, you must prune immediately after the flowers fade in late spring. Simply snip off the spent flower clusters and remove any dead or crossing branches to improve air circulation. Think of this like a post-bloom haircut that allows the plant to spend its energy growing new stems where next year's buds will form.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring just as the new growth begins to appear. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer because this can force tender new growth that will be easily damaged by the first winter frost. A simple application of a "Rose" or "All-Purpose" food once a year is usually all this heavy bloomer needs to stay healthy.
