Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

The dense and fluffy tiny foliage of the Korean Boxwood (Buxus microphylla var. koreana) is a broadleaf evergreen shrub with a compact, mounded form with an open habit when grown naturally. It doesn't require special care but if you prefer, you can easily shape it into precise shapes.

You'll likely miss the tiny, greenish-yellow flowers that appear in spring, but you'll easily notice the fragrance they emit and the pollinators they will draw to your yard! The 3/4-inch, ovate leaves range from a lovely light-green to medium-green shade, their dense nature providing a full, robust appearance.

The evergreen leaves shift to a yellow-brown to purplish in winter, a little added color for your autumn landscape. Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 5 to 9, these mature at 2-3 feet in height but spread wide at 4-6 feet. The Korean Boxwoods prefer moist, sandy loam with slightly acidic to slightly alkaline pH in the sun. In colder winters, the lush green leaves may turn bronzy.

Planting and Application:

These are often used as a specimen plant in a formal garden! Both sheared or naturally fluffy, Boxwood can be shaped into any form you'd like! These plants are a perfect choice if you are looking to create an extremely low-maintenance garden. This is a perfect "plant it and forget it" plant that will provide much-needed green color and structure to your landscaping.

Just imagine a row of these lining your driveway as a stately welcome to your home! Planted as lush evergreen foundation hedges that won't block your windows, Korean Boxwoods are wonderful lower screening barriers and backdrops. Place a few of these for a short hedge along your front walkway or use one as a lovely accent at the border of your flower bed. The possibilities with this beautiful workhorse are endless!

Plant in large containers and planters as a trained Topiary, or as a sheared low border that will enclose a landscaping bed in year-round greenery. You will feel like you stepped into a castle garden! Go big with en masse plantings that fill your landscape with low-maintenance greenery to tie everything together.

  • Dense Fine-Textured Evergreen Shrub
  • Low-Growing Wide-Spreading Form
  • Tiny Pollinator-Friendly Blooms
  • Wonderfully Fluffy Natural Shrub & Dense When Formally Sheared
  • Low Hedges, Backdrops, Containers, Topiaries & Screening

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Boxwood needs full sun for the densest greenest growth. Provide a location with well-drained soil and regular moisture, needing less moisture once established. All plants appreciate being planted with the life-long support of Nature Hills Root Booster and 3-4 inches of arborist mulch over the entire root system.

People are curious about when to trim Boxwoods, but it's easy! Simply prune your shrub after the first flush of growth in the late spring to keep that formal look. If left untrimmed, it has a classic free-form growth! It's not necessary to plant Korean Boxwood in a sheltered location, but it would prefer to have a protected spot from harsh winter winds. Give plants subjected to drying northern winds an application of wilt-stop and a long drink before winter to prevent windburn.

Deer and rabbit pose no problem for Korean Boxwood and it's relatively resistant to the major pests that usually bother Boxwoods.

  • Full Sun Evergreens
  • Moderate Moisture Needs
  • Highly Adaptable - Any Well-Drained Soil Type
  • Prune Or Shear After Flowering/First Flush of Growth
  • Deer, Rabbit, Insect & Pest Resistant

All in all, the Korean Boxwood Shrub is a hardy variety of Boxwood that will ask very little of you, yet provide an abundance of value! Order enough to complete your landscaping project today from Nature Hills Nursery!
