Korean Boxwood: The Hardy Evergreen For Any Landscape!
Looking for a durable and versatile evergreen shrub to enhance your landscape? The Korean Boxwood (Buxus sinica var. insularis) is an excellent choice for creating neat hedges, garden borders, or low-maintenance foundation plantings.
The broadleaf evergreen leaves shift to a yellow-brown to purplish in winter, a little added color for your autumn landscape. In colder winters, the lush green leaves may turn bronzy.
Known for its compact size and exceptional hardiness, this shrub thrives in colder climates and brings year-round greenery to your yard.

Why Choose Korean Boxwood?
You'll likely miss the tiny, greenish-yellow flowers that appear in spring, but you'll easily notice the fragrance they emit and the pollinators they will draw to your yard!
- Cold Hardy: Tolerates harsh winters better than many other Boxwood varieties.
- Compact and Versatile: Perfect for small gardens, formal landscapes, and container planting.
- Evergreen Appeal: Dense fine-textured broadleaf evergreen, lush green foliage that stays vibrant year-round.
- Low Maintenance: Easy to grow and highly adaptable to various growing conditions.
- Disease Resistant: More resistant to Boxwood blight and leaf-miner compared to other varieties.
- Mass Plantings: Go big with en masse plantings that fill your landscape with low-maintenance greenery to tie everything together.
Landscape Uses For Korean Boxwood
The 3/4-inch, ovate year-round leaves range from a lovely light-green to medium-green shade, their dense nature providing a full, robust appearance.
- Low Hedges: Create neat, defined borders for walkways or garden beds.
- Foundation Plantings: Add structure and greenery around your home or outdoor spaces.
- Formal Gardens: Ideal for symmetrical designs and traditional landscapes.
- Container Displays: Grow in pots to frame patios, porches, or entryways.
- Winter Interest: Retains vibrant foliage during the colder months, offering year-round appeal.
Boxwood Planting & Care Tips
Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 5 to 9, these mature at 2-3 feet in height but spread wide at 4-6 feet. The Korean Boxwoods prefer moist, sandy loam with slightly acidic to slightly alkaline pH in the sun. All plants appreciate being planted with the life-long support of Nature Hills Root Booster.
- Sunlight: Grows best in full sun to partial shade.
- Soil: Prefers well-drained soil that is slightly acidic to neutral. Avoid waterlogged areas.
- Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once mature, the shrub is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during dry spells.
- Winter Watering: Give plants subjected to drying northern winds an application of wilt-stop and a long drink before winter to prevent windburn.
- Pruning: Prune lightly in late spring or early summer to maintain its shape. Avoid heavy pruning during late summer to prevent winter damage. Looks great both sheared formally or naturally fluffy!
- Mulching: Apply a 3-4 inch layer of mulch to regulate soil temperature and retain moisture.
