Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: For the most vibrant orange blooms and strongest stems, provide at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. While it can tolerate some afternoon shade, you will see a significant decrease in flower production and a higher risk of powdery mildew on the foliage.
  • Soil: This rose thrives in rich, loamy soil that drains as well as a colander. If you are dealing with heavy clay, mix in organic compost or peat moss to improve aeration, as "wet feet" will quickly lead to root rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water deeply two to three times a week to help the roots dive deep into the soil. Once the Honor™ Rose is established, it becomes more resilient, but you should still provide about an inch of water weekly at the base of the plant. Inconsistent watering or overhead misting can lead to smaller flowers and invite black spot, so keep the moisture at the soil level.

Pruning Tips

Since this hybrid tea rose blooms on new wood, you should prune it in late winter or very early spring just as the buds begin to swell. Think of this like a fresh haircut that encourages new growth; remove any dead or spindly canes and cut the remaining healthy ones back to about 12 inches high at a 45 degree angle. This process opens up the center of the bush for better airflow, which keeps the plant healthy and prevents disease.

Fertilizer Needs

Feed your rose with a balanced rose food or a slow release granular fertilizer starting in early spring when new leaves appear. Repeat this every four to six weeks through July, but stop all fertilization by late summer. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the season because they stimulate tender new growth that will be easily killed by the first frost of winter.

Description

Impeccably crisp, bright white color graces the All-American Rose Selection winner simply called the Honor™ Rose (Rosa 'Jacolite')! When fully open, it's easy to see why the name was selected by watching the buff-colored long, pointed buds open into very large, double blooms with up to 30 petals apiece! This is a "best of the best" Hybrid Tea Rose to fill your landscape with an outstanding flowering display.

Held on long stems, these thick, polished petals start with a hint of carmine and spiral open to age a very pure and white. Borne both singly and in small, dedicated clusters on long stems, rounded Honor™ Roses last a long time as a cut flower in the vase and on the bush! Much to the delight of all your pollinators!

Vigorous, upright Honor™ Rose reaches tall and features large, dark green leaves and bronzy-red new foliage that is very resistant to powdery mildew. Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 6 through 10, Honor™ is a fantastically heat and humidity-resistant Hybrid Tea Rose! Growing to a tidy 4-5 feet in height and 3-4 feet in width, these are wonderfully oval-shaped, dense shrubs that work in large or small landscapes equally!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

For the best results, plant Honor™ Rose in full sun where they will receive at least six hours of sunlight a day, favoring morning sun to dry the leaves of dew. Roses also need well-drained soil and good air circulation to stay happy and healthy for years. Easy to grow, simply plant in organically enriched soil. Dig your planting hole twice as wide as the roots, but no deeper. Keep the soil level the same as we have them grown in at the nursery. Rose roots don't tolerate standing water. Don't forget to add a 3-4 inch thick layer of arborist mulch.

Hybrid Tea Roses deserve the life-long support of symbiotic Nature Hills Root Booster used in the planting hole. If the weather is dry, plan to give them a regular schedule of supplemental water. Feed your blooms a high-quality fertilizer according to the label directions.

In fall, bag and remove all leaf litter. In colder zones, mound up mulch over the remaining canes for overwintering in late November. Always wait to prune Roses until early spring when you pull the mulch away. At that time, prune each of the Rose canes down to 6 - 8 inches at a 45-degree angle just above a nice, fat bud. Growing Hybrid Tea Roses in zones colder than zone 7 should be mounded with 8-12 inches of mulch in late fall after the frost killed the leaves for best overwintering. Frequently Asked Questions

How to plant hybrid tea roses?

  • Plant hybrid tea roses in full sun with well-draining soil after the last frost date. Space Honor™ roses 3-4 feet apart to accommodate their mature width. Choose a location with good air circulation to prevent disease and ensure these zone 6-10 performers have room to reach their 4-5 foot height.

How big do hybrid tea roses get?

  • Hybrid tea roses typically reach 4-6 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide at maturity. The Honor™ variety grows to a tidy 4-5 feet in height with an oval, dense shape that works well in both large and small landscapes. Plan for adequate spacing when planting, available at naturehills.com.

Where to buy hybrid tea roses?

  • Hybrid tea roses are available at quality nurseries, garden centers, and specialty rose growers nationwide. Look for disease-resistant varieties like Honor™ that thrive in zones 6-10 and reach 4-5 feet tall. Choose reputable suppliers who offer bare-root or container plants with strong root systems for best establishment.

Is this rose resistant to deer browsing?

  • Honor™ Hybrid Tea Rose is not specifically bred for deer resistance. While deer typically avoid most roses due to their thorns, hungry deer will browse rose foliage and buds when other food sources are scarce. Consider companion planting with deer-repelling herbs like lavender or rosemary around your roses.

How much fertilizer does this rose need throughout the growing season?

  • Honor™ Hybrid Tea Roses benefit from monthly feeding during their active growing season from spring through fall. As vigorous growers reaching 4-5 feet tall, they need consistent nutrition to fuel their continuous bloom flushes. Apply a balanced rose fertilizer every 4-6 weeks, available at naturehills.com.

How cold hardy is this variety and does it need winter protection?

  • Honor™ Rose is hardy in USDA zones 6-10, handling both heat and humidity well. In zone 6, provide winter protection like mulching around the base and burlap wrapping in exposed locations. Zones 7-10 typically need no special winter care.
