The Green Gage Bavay's Plum, (Prunus subsp. italica var. claudiana), features a rounded-oval shape and smooth texture that makes it perfect as a juicy, fresh eating Plum! Sweet as candy, these are fantastic healthy treats.

Bavay’s has a full-bodied, rich flavor, smooth texture and lime-green color. The pale green flesh is freestone and ripens mid-September, and it sometimes takes on amber-hued blush inside and out!

A small plum originating in Belgium during the early 1800s, Bavay’s has been a novel favorite ever since! Not to be confused with the Asian Green Gage and other Gage types, Bavay’s Green Gage is unique unto itself.

They are considered to be among the finest dessert plums and have been a long-time favorite. The fruit is tender and juicy, and super sweet-tart! These gems are perfect for drying, preserving and cooking!

Green Gage blooms later than Santa Rosa and other Japanese types. Suitable for areas that can have a late frost. While self-fruitful, this variety provides larger yields per tree when planted with a suitable pollinator partner.

In mid to late spring, Bavay’s bursts into flower with a flush of white blossoms, calling pollinators from near and far! It is a compact grower with handsome deep-green foliage and a moderate height at maturity. Presenting an incredible accent when in full bloom and when dripping with fruit!

How to Use Green Gage Bavay's Plum Tree In The Landscape

Green Gage is a relatively small fruit tree with very good productivity! Great to tuck into existing orchards and established landscapes, you’ll soon be enjoying lots of delicious fruit from this ornamental landscaping tree!

A fantastic specimen for front yard landscaping, you can also use these beautiful trees for softening the corners of your garage and adorning an empty side yard! Be sure to plant your Plum outside a window you frequently walk past, just so you can keep an eye on its seasonal wardrobe changes!

Use this fantastically sweet plum for fresh eating as a healthy treat in a lunch box or as an unusual addition to your gourmet cheese tray! Create unique preserves and chutney for holiday gift-giving, or dry these sweet gems for year-round snacking!

Plum jam and jellies are divine and golden-amber colored when made with these ripe and meaty fleshed jewels. But the best use for Bavay’s is traditionally used for baking! Try these in your next Plum cobbler, crumble, or as an incredibly delicious galette!

#ProPlantTips For Care

Hardy in USDA growing zones 5-8, these are cold-tolerant trees. Preferring full sun, be sure to allow your fruit tree to enjoy at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day, favoring the drying power of the morning sun.

Best in enriched, loamy and well-drained soil, be sure to provide plenty of water for your young tree while it becomes established its first year, then afterward provide supplemental watering during the heat of summer, when in fruit and in times of drought.

A good layer of mulch over the root system provides moisture retention and insulation from the heat and cold throughout the entire year.

Situate in an area that is protected from frost pockets and with good air circulation. Prune to keep an open canopy so that both sunlight and airflow reach the interior. Green gage plum

I had never used this compay before so i was hesitant to buy. This is the only place that had in stock items i wanted. I can honestly say this is the best looking tree i have ever recieved from a online store. The tree really is impressive and looked to be in great shape after shipping. I have purchased many plum trees from other outlets and have only had 3 survive more than a year. This tree was really established well in the shipping pot. I can not say enough good things about this product. I hope that the harsh climate of Elko, Nevada or me does not kill this tree.

Hello Mark,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with your Green Gage plum tree purchase! We truly appreciate your trust in us, especially since trying a new company can feel uncertain. It’s fantastic to hear that your tree arrived healthy, well-established, and impressive—it sounds like it was packed with care.

Elko’s climate can indeed be challenging with its temperature swings and dryness. To help ensure your plum tree thrives, we recommend giving it a protected spot from extreme winds, watering consistently (especially during dry times), and mulching around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. If you’d like, we can also share detailed care tips tailored for fruit trees in harsher climates.

We’re rooting for your Green Gage plum tree to flourish and bring you a bountiful harvest for years to come. Thanks again for your kind words and trust!

Hi Mark,

Thank you so much for sharing your positive experience with us! We completely understand how important it is to feel confident with your first purchase, and we’re thrilled to hear that your Green Gage plum tree arrived looking so impressive and healthy. It sounds like it was really well cared for before shipping, which is wonderful news!

Living in Elko, Nevada, definitely presents some unique challenges for plum trees due to the harsh climate. To give your tree the best chance to thrive, we recommend situating it where it will get full sun and be sheltered from strong winds. Mulching around the base can help regulate soil temperature and retain moisture—two key factors in such dry, challenging environments. If you ever want guidance on seasonal care tailored to your climate, feel free to reach out or check our online resources for Raspberry Garden Plum Guides.

Thanks again for trusting us to help you grow your garden, Mark. We hope your plum tree brings you delicious fruit and joy for many years to come!

Green Gage Plum

I consider this to be one of the top three plum trees in terms of quality. This plum does not keep as well as others so its commercial marketing is slim. Generally when folks think of plums they reflect on the tasteless fruit found in a grocery store. Any home grown tree ripened plum is usually really pleasing to eat. The Green Gage plum is one of the best. However, my trees tend to have off and on years though as far as bearing fruit.

Dear Chuck,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughtful insights on the Green Gage Bavay's Plum Tree! We truly appreciate hearing from someone who understands the nuances of homegrown fruit and recognizes the exceptional quality of this variety. You’re absolutely right—Green Gage plums offer a delicious flavor that grocery store varieties often lack, making them a prized addition to any garden.

Regarding the variability in your tree’s bearing years, know that this can be quite common with plum trees—especially heirloom and specialty types like Green Gage. Factors such as weather fluctuations, pollination, pruning practices, and overall tree health can influence fruit production. To help encourage more consistent blooming and harvests, you might consider tried and true care tips like pruning in late winter, ensuring adequate watering during dry spells, and sometimes supplementing with organic fertilizer to boost vigor.

If you’re curious for more detailed guidance or seasonal reminders, we’d be happy to provide resources tailored to your region. Please let us know anytime how we can support your gardening success even further!

Wishing you happy planting,

Dear Chuck,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughtful insights on the Green Gage Bavay's Plum Tree. We truly appreciate your perspective as an experienced gardener—the way you highlight how this plum’s fresh, homegrown flavor stands apart from typical supermarket fruit beautifully captures why it’s so special. You’re absolutely right that the fruit can have variable yields from year to year, which is a common trait among many plum varieties that require particular weather and care conditions to yield consistently.

If you’re interested, we’d be happy to share tips on how to encourage steadier fruit production, such as ensuring your Trees receive adequate sunlight, well-draining soil, and appropriate pruning [, which can stimulate more consistent blooms]. Additionally, some growers find providing supplemental water during dry spells and practicing proper pest management boosts overall health and fruit set.

Thanks again, Chuck, for taking the time to provide such a detailed review. We’re excited to see you continuing to enjoy this flavorful plum, and please don’t hesitate to reach out if you ever need further assistance or guidance.
