Growing Zones 4-8
Want to add a little cutie to your landscape? The Biokovo Geranium (Geranium x cantabrigiense 'Biokovo') is the plant for you! This Geranium won the Perennial of the Year award in 2015! The soft pink blooms are highlighted by darker pink stamen and pink veins, and they will even be decked out in bees and butterflies!
This type of Geranium is a dwarf variety that will grow relatively low to the ground. Fragrant dark green foliage has a rounded, deep-lobed leaf shape that turns into a brilliant red to orange-red color from fall right into winter. Low-growing plants spread slowly, and blooms late spring to early summer - sometimes light rebloom may be seen. Low-growing with flush after flush of bloom throughout the growing season! The deeply incised leaves form lush mounds through the entire growing season, even remaining evergreen in warm climates.
A naturally occurring hybrid that is sterile and will not spread by seed, but will slowly spread underground filling in beautifully as a solid mass. This mounding plant will reach about 10 inches in height and will spread up to 1 ½ feet in width when fully mature. Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 4 to 8, these perennial Biokovo Geraniums are very adaptable!
Planting and Application:
Biokovo is best grown in your sun gardens and cool things off with their soft pastel pinks. Fantastic space-saving perennials, any sized courtyard, Cottage garden, mixed perennial border, and hardy enough for the Rock Garden!
Biokovo is also known to perform well in containers and pots. Use this Geranium as a "spiller" in the spiller-thriller-filler combination of outdoor pot arrangements. Tuck them around the edge of your large outdoor containers.
Since Biokovo is a medium grower this will be a perfect choice for groundcovers, edgings, and mass plantings. This is low maintenance and easy to control and is a garden favorite for front-of-the-border bright beauty!
- Barely Pinkish-White Blooms With Pink Veins
- Prolific Flowering & Rebloomer
- Butterfly & Bee Magnet
- Great Red/Orange Fall Color
- Useful Spreading Form - Won't Outgrow the Space
- Great in Mass Plantings, Borders, Edging & Containers
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Biokovo grows best in full sun or partial shade. In too much shade, this perennial will not produce as many blooms and will not spread well. Your soil should be moist, organic, and very well-draining. Sandy, loamy, chalky, slightly acidic, and rich humus soils will help this plant grow and thrive. Once the roots become established, it can withstand periods of drought. You will need to have more frequent watering if you have this growing in containers. A 3-4-inch layer of arborist mulch will boost your plant's health significantly and keep them stress-free.
You can deadhead after the first wave of blooms to later enjoy a second! In late autumn or early spring, trim last year's foliage down to a 1-inch length in early spring. Biokovo may be evergreen in warmer hardiness zones. If so, gently rake out fallen leaves to tidy up at that time, taking care not to pull too hard.
- Best Growth in Full Sun
- Tolerates Heat & Humidity & Extreme Cold
- Moderate Moisture In Well-Drained Soil
- Prune Back in Late Autumn/Early Spring
- Adaptable & Drought Tolerant
