Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Silver Rose Garlic requires full sun, meaning at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily. Plenty of sun ensures the largest possible bulbs; planting in shade will result in small, stunted cloves and weaker flavor.
  • Soil: Aim for loose, crumbly soil rich in organic matter that drains like a colander. If you have heavy clay, mix in compost or plant in raised beds to prevent the bulbs from rotting in standing water during the winter.

Watering Requirements

During the first few weeks after fall planting, water once a week to help roots settle before the ground freezes. Once growth resumes in spring, provide about 1 inch of water per week, ensuring the moisture reaches 6 inches deep. Stop watering entirely about two weeks before harvest when the lower leaves start to brown so the outer wrappers can dry and cure properly.

Pruning Tips

Since Silver Rose is a softneck variety, it does not produce a flowering scape that needs to be cut. Instead, your "pruning" happens at harvest time when you trim the roots and dried tops. Think of this like a clean-up phase where removing the dead foliage helps prevent trapped moisture and mold during storage.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, organic fertilizer or a nitrogen-rich meal in early spring as soon as green shoots emerge to power leaf growth. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers after the bulbs begin to swell in late spring. Too much nitrogen late in the season encourages the plant to keep growing leaves instead of diverting energy into the cloves you want to eat.

Loving the full sun, Silver Rose bulbs do best in well-drained loose soil. Do not worry about squirrels or rabbits bothering your crop either! Fast-growing, this soft-neck garlic is easy to grow!

Plant the cloves (called bulbils) individually with a small portion of the bulb poking above the soil, root side down, and you'll want to plant this variety about six inches apart and two to three inches deep. Harvest when tops start to dry, clean, and store in a cool, dry location with plenty of air circulation.
