Definitely spreads

I bought this plant for a xeriscaped area that gets full baking sun all day. Mulched with large bark, watered by MP rotors 2 x per week, 1 foot away from a busy road, with hot amended and mostly clay soil this plant spread 3 feet in every direction in 3 weeks. I kept digging up the runners, but eventually decided that I didn't want it crowding the rest of the plants in this flowerbed. I dug it up and gave it to my neighbor. I'll still enjoy it but don't have to control it. Excellent plant for covering an area that is hard to grow. Water it until established and then sit back and enjoy.

Hi Simon,

Thank you so much for sharing your detailed experience with this plant! We really appreciate your thoughtful observations about its growth in challenging conditions like full sun, clay soil, and minimal watering. It’s wonderful to hear how vigorous it was, spreading three feet in every direction so quickly — that kind of coverage is definitely a testament to its hardiness and suitability for tough xeriscape spots.

We completely understand your decision to rehome it to your neighbor, especially to maintain harmony with other plants in the bed. Your insight about watering it well until established and then letting it thrive on its own is a great tip for fellow gardeners tackling similar landscapes.

If you ever want recommendations for mock groundcovers or desert-friendly plants that have a more compact habit, we’re always happy to assist. Feel free to reach out anytime!

Wishing you happy planting,
