Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

*If you have found your zone already, it will be highlighted in the table below.

The Desert King Fig (Ficus carica 'Desert King') is a good choice for cooler climates. It is a large, deep-green fig with strawberry-red flesh. Sweet and juicy, these are decadent gems loaded with healthy benefits.

The white flowers of Desert King are unusual and usually fairly inconspicuous. Because it ripens in mid-summer, Desert King is a great variety for gardeners in coastal, high elevation, and other cool regions.

This is a heavy producer of excellent quality, sweet figs. The tree sets a large early crop from June to August, then sets a secondary crop. Known as a breba crop, these tasty fruits develop on last year’s growth.

The fruit is truly unique. Unlike most fruit in which the edible structure is matured ovary tissue, a Fig's edible structure is actually the stem tissue! The fig fruit is an inverted flower with both the male and female flower parts enclosed in stem tissue.

How to Use Desert King Fig Tree In The Landscape

Versatile ornamentals, these prolific trees are also fantastic landscaping gems! Desert King makes a good container tree in colder climates!

With a rounded crown, the green-gray foliage is a vigorous grower and fills out quickly. A Fig tree planting as a hedge for privacy and screening is just as lovely as a stand-alone focal point!

Figs are wonderful for fresh eating and make delicious jam and dried fruit. Even the Fig leaves are useful for your savory recipes! Not to mention, beautiful! The lobed foliage of Desert King is impressive indeed!

Use this modestly sized tree as a unique and tropical-looking specimen or accent. Perfect for both front and back yard garden beds! Shade a patio or seating area with the lush foliage without taking up precious space!

You can even prune these smaller and keep them as a beautiful container tree on your sunny balcony or porch! Adding an exotic flair to any setting!

#ProPlantTips For Care

Versatile in poor soil and alkaline conditions, Desert King is also a low-maintenance tree that gives so much, while requiring so little from you! Provide a full sun area on your property and you’ll reap juicy rewards!

Plant in enriched soil that is very well-drained and water moderately throughout the growing season. Becoming drought tolerant once established, be sure to give your container plants extra attention.

Prune in late winter for shaping and size control. These self-fruitful trees tolerate the occasional late spring frost and cooler summers than most other Figs. Hardy in USDA growing zones 5 through 9.
