Large and in charge, you only need one of these beauties to make a statement! (But why not make a grand statement? Order more than one!) If Hydrangeas are the queen of summer flowering shrubs, then Chinese Snowball Viburnum (Viburnum macrocephalum 'Sterile') has sprung all wrapped up! This is the shrub for the savvy spring gardener!
The Chinese Snowball is covered in blooms the size of softballs that start out lime green and then open to glistening white! These incredible round white flowers can be up to 8 inches across! Pollinators galore flock to these blooms! These big, showy shrubs are easy to grow and offer big screening and put on quite a show.
In that hazy time between the flush of tulips and daffodils and the onset of summer color, Chinese Snowball will give you grand cuts for big vases! Even though the flowers are the real show, once they are gone the dense, rounded shrub is a bushy background filler that will make your summer flowering plants really pop. From April through May (depending on where you live) you will have armloads of blooms to enjoy in the garden or in the vase.
Planting and Application:
Carve out private areas in your landscape using several of these planted in a short hedge. For a solid screen in a hurry, plant them 3 - 4 feet apart on center. You'll measure from the center of one to the center of the next plant. If you have a bit more time on your hands or want a looser, less dense hedge, just increase the spacing to 5 - 6 feet apart. Again, you'll measure between the center of each plant.
Why not create a Secret Garden using several as living walls of green leaves? You'll love the look in spring as they'll be wallpapered with those super showy spring blooms. Imagine the dinner parties in a private outdoor dining area or cozy conversation area. Line the north side of your pool deck with this easy-care, living privacy fence.
Chinese Snowball Viburnum grows to a larger size in the southern regions of its growing region. In mild winters, the plants may be evergreen or semi-evergreen and hold on to their leaves in winter. In these areas, these plants make nice-sized screening plants and excellent hedges. Stagger a double row of these across the back of your mixed border to tie the whole design together. Or, use them as a really beautiful way to extend the height of your hardscaped fence.
In the northern limits of their hardiness zones 6 through 9, these Viburnum will stay a bit smaller, but don't worry! Flower production is not reduced at all! Massive flower displays on this plant make it highly desirable for individual specimen plants or excellent shorter hedges.
- Outstanding Showy, White Mophead-Like Blooms
- High Impact Landscape, Pollinator & Wildlife Shelter Deciduous Shrubs
- Dark Green Leaves are Semi-Evergreen in Southern Regions
- Great as a Background Shrub for Borders or Beds
- Large Scale Specimens are Excellent for Hedges & Screening
#ProPlantTips for Care:
This deciduous variety of easy-care Viburnum will perform in either full sun or part shade. These beautiful shrubs require well-drained soil and moderate, consistent moisture for best performance. Because this is a sterile Chinese Snowball Viburnum, you won't have the fruit that Viburnums usually produce. Deer don't prefer the taste and rabbits generally leave these shrubs alone!
Pruning Chinese Snowball Viburnum is easy. Once a year as soon as the flowering is done, give it a quick trim to remove the dead wood and shape it up. Be sure to prune after the blooms are done, so you don't sacrifice any of those beautiful flowers. Every 3 - 5 years, rejuvenate the shrub by removing the oldest, fattest stems all the way down to the ground. This allows the younger, thinner stems to produce the very best blooms.
- Easy to Grow in Full Sun or Part Shade
- Most Well-Drained Soils
- Provide Mulched Beds & Moderate, Regular Water
- Blooms on Old Wood - Prune After Flowering To Deadhead & Shape Shrub
- Sterile Plants Don't Produce Seed
- Deer Don't Prefer The Taste & Juglone Resistant
This easy-care shrub is very rewarding! NatureHills.com is happy to offer the Chinese Snowball Viburnum for sale. Enjoy this wonderful plant! The sooner you order, the sooner you'll get started making memories for yourself, your family, and your friends. Order today!
