If your garden or landscape needs a blast of color, the Burgundy Wine Nandina (Nandina domestica 'Burgundy Wine') packs a vibrant punch. Known for its complementary colors and its naturally even shape, this broadleaf evergreen is a go-to for landscape artists!
Also known as Heavenly Bamboo and Chinese Sacred Bamboo, Nandina have Bamboo-like leaves but are not spreaders like their cousins. The Burgundy Wine Nandina practically invented the ombre look. This plant's foliage is green near the soil and transitions to wine-red and purple at its top. Its burgundies become most vibrant in the springtime sun. Your neighbors are sure to admire how the contrasting colors dazzle from a distance.
This plant has long, narrow foliage that reaches out in all directions, but remains a naturally tidy and neat shrub without all the work. These leaves create wonderful texture with their fine, yet soft pointed ends, almost looking tropical. The long narrow leaves add to the appeal of the Burgundy Wine Nandina's color combination.
Are you a fan of flowers? This plant offers clusters of white blossoms in the late spring. These modest buds unfurl to display simple, yet elegant flowers with a touch of yellow. If you like a plant that has a big personality all year long, you'll love that the Burgundy Wine Nandina produces small, ornamental white fruit from early fall into later winter. Adding to the vibrant fall color!
Planting and Application:
Vivid foundation plantings with colors that last all year long, Nandina shrubs like Burgundy Wine show off as specimens and landscape accents! Lighting up any style garden or color theme, but especially goes well with other burgundy and purple foliage plants and flowers, dark foliage gardens, and contrasts beautifully with chartreuse leaves!
Add this plant to a container arrangement for all-year color, space-saving screening, and gorgeous focal points on porches, patios, and balcony gardens! Or this ornamental will add some spunk as edging along a path or as a foundation plant along the side of your home.
Create low hedges and property division with these 2-3 feet tall and wide bundles of wine-red! Even adding brilliant edging and facer plants, enlivening weary evergreen conifers and hedges. Stand out from the rest with a low-maintenance mass planting that is sure to catch the eye while handling xeric conditions, and fire-wise defensive plans! Nandina thrives in Rock Gardens, as foundation hedges, and is low-maintenance for Commercial sites!
- Excellent Wine-Red & Green Foliage
- Lacy Fine-Textured Leaves & Small Neat Mounded Form
- Produces Cute White Flowers & White Berries
- Great For Vivid Fall Color

This plant almost glows with color! So, make sure you plant it in full sun or partial shade, where it can thrive and be fully appreciated for its glorious hues. This plant does best in well-drained, medium-moisture soil. Give it a dressing of mulch over the roots for best performance.
Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 6 to 10, Nandina are urban pollution-tolerant, disease, and pest-resistant plants, Nandina have an upright, compact nature, far smaller than that of other varieties, they won't require any special care from you, and they are even drought-tolerant once established!
