Description
Bold color & high performance! Springtime with Rhododendrons blooming in the landscape is a joyful experience! This variety gives you plenty of pretty "flower candy" in late springtime. End your Rhododendron flowering season with Boursault Rhododendron (Rhododendron catawbiense 'Boursault'). This easy-to-grow variety features brilliant, clear blue-violet petals daubed with brick reddish or pale brown markings!
These are simply flower factories in the late mid-season of Rhododendron flowering. You just can't miss the way these bright violet buds open into clear lavender-blue blooms! You'll also love the way the round-shaped trusses are held prominently above the leathery leaves. Each eye-popping cluster usually contains about 17 flowers. Rely on this elegant Rhododendron year-long. One of the "Ironsides" series, this is a reliable evergreen plant that gives your garden structure in wintertime and a fabulous color display in spring.
In time, it will grow into a dense, upright, and spreading flowering landscape asset. They'll perform beautifully in both cold climates, sun, and high heat with the right light and soil conditions. Our growers take special pride in both caring for these wonderful plants in the nursery and in expertly packing them for shipment direct to your door. Cold-hardy throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 8 and grow to a sizeable 5-6 feet in height and 6-8 feet in width.
Planting and Application:
With their irresistible spring blooms, Boursault is a superstar accent border shrub. Draw the eye along your partially shaded garden path with a long, winding row of them. Mix in with other Rhododendron varieties that bloom a bit earlier to extend your glorious season of bloom. Try the early blooming P.J.M. series as a counterpoint to kick the season off. They also partner beautifully with Azaleas, as well.
Use behind your patio to give you a welcome private year-round retreat. You can even create a special Garden Room using a series of these as "living walls" to surround all sides of your space. Boursault is a great selection to use in foundation plantings but gives it enough room to make a statement. Try it at the corner of your house and allow them to fill into their full height and width to amaze your neighborhood.
People will slow down in their cars to get a good look. Get the most from your space by adding a flagstone patio nearby, complete with comfy seating.
You'll have to count the Hummingbirds that visit your shrubs! With their preferred funnel-shaped blooms, Boursault should be a staple in wildlife, bird and butterfly-friendly gardens.
Plant multiple shrubs to fill a wide, open area with their spreading habit. Massed plantings grow into an incredible feature! Use a zigzagging planting pattern spaced 4 feet apart for faster results. Measure from the center of one to the center of the next.
- Large, Showy Pinky Purple Blooms
- Produces a Plethora of Flower Trusses!
- Attracts Hummingbirds and Butterflies
- Broad-Leaved Evergreen
- Hedges, Containers, Accents, Specimens & Four Season Color
#ProPlantTips For Care
Plant Rhododendrons in a spot where they will receive morning sun and partial shade in the afternoon. Acidic soils with a low pH between 4.5 to 6 and a high concentration of organic materials are best. Rhododendrons also require very well-drained soil. If you have clay soils or poor drainage, consider creating a raised bed with a heaped mound of native soil from another part of your yard. Apply a regular application of water to keep them evenly moist. With proper care, Boursault is actually a very low-maintenance variety.
You can incorporate several handfuls of compost, and acidic soil conditioner, but try not to overdo it. The root system should spread wide and grow down into your unamended native soil, after all. Use Nature Hills Root Booster when planting to support the root system as it grows and for the life of the plant.
Please don't disturb the shallow root system. Keep the area underneath free of weeds for best results. Top-dress your plant with a light layer of acidic pine mulch during the growing season. This will work naturally to improve the quality of your soil over time. Only prune flowering broad-leaved evergreen shrubs immediately after the flowers fade to avoid removing next year's spring display!
- Full Sun & Partial Shade/Afternoon Shade
- Low Maintenance in Well-Drained, Acidic Soils
- Regular Moisture & Appreciates Mulched Beds
- Prune Only After Flowering
- Very Cold Hardy & Heat Tolerant
