Where to Plant

• Sunlight: Give this tree at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily to ensure the best purple flower color and vigorous reblooming. While it can survive in light shade, the bloom density will drop significantly and the plant may become leggy.
• Soil: Lilacs require well-drained soil and will not tolerate "wet feet" or standing water. If you have heavy clay soil, amend it with compost or plant in a raised mound to improve drainage and air circulation around the roots.

Watering Requirements

During the first season, water deeply once a week to help the root system establish, checking that the soil is moist but not soggy. Once established, this Lilac is fairly drought tolerant, but inconsistent watering during the summer heat can stunt the new growth needed for the second round of fall blooms.

Pruning Tips

Because this variety blooms on both old and new wood, the ideal time to prune is immediately after the spring flush of flowers fades. Give the canopy a light "haircut" to remove spent blooms, which stimulates the fresh growth that will carry your summer and fall flowers. Always remove any green suckers that appear at the base or along the main trunk to maintain the tree form shape.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release shrub fertilizer in early spring just as new green growth begins to emerge. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers later in the season, as these encourage leafy green growth at the expense of flower production.
