A rare evergreen perennial with red to bronze garden color! Be the first on your block to plant this exciting and unusual flowering perennial! The Winter Glow Bergenia (Bergenia cordifolia 'Winter Glow') is a broad-leaf evergreen perennial cultivar that is sure to be noticed with its deep green and shiny, cabbage-like leaves!
These leaves have an unusually thick rubbery feel that makes a "pig squeak" sound when rubbed between your fingers, giving this plant its common name Pig Squeak! The green leaves are large for this petite plant, forming a curious rosette that frames the tall, slender flowering stems beautifully! It is slow-growing and does not spread vigorously.
The real spring show begins when Winter Glow shoots up tall red stems on 15-inch stalks with a cluster of funnel-shaped rosy-red blossoms with ruffled edges! Flowering from early to late spring, provide long-lasting and fragrant cut blooms for bouquets. Bergenia may even rebloom in the fall!
Very cold-hardy down to USDA planting zone 3, Winter Glow surprises gardeners in zones 6 to 8 by being remarkably evergreen! In mild winters, all gardeners will enjoy their reddish-bronze hue throughout the fall and winter months which returns to deep green in the spring!
Planting and Application:
Be sure to place this plant where it can be noticed! Winter Glow is a versatile flowering perennial that can handle both sun to shade! Perfect for use as a politely spreading groundcover and landscape filler! Lower-growing and space-saving with tidy rosettes of greenery, these perennials suit any style garden as flowering edging and front-of-the-border focal points!
Perfect little bloomers for Pollinator and mixed Perennial Gardens, enlivening both sun or shade Cottage gardens, Cut flower borders, and Shade Gardens! Sometimes spelled as one word, Winterglow and Pigsqueak, Bergenia are long-lasting, sometimes holding their showy blooms until May!
Fantastic for container gardeners and as fillers and thrillers in specimen planters or mixed container gardens, these hardy plants handle a wide range of growing conditions except for extreme heat and dry full sun. You'll have fragrant blooms for your bouquets, and early spring nectar for butterflies and bees with these widely-adaptable plants!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Tolerant of some saline/salt environments, poor soils, and even occasional drought, easy-to-grow Perennials like Bergenia handle full sun in moist cooler climates and full heavy shade in hot growing zones. The only thing this tough perennial doesn't like is hot dry, exposed sites. Provide regular moisture throughout the first year in the ground and a 3-4 inch deep layer of arborist bark chip mulch around the root system.
Deadhead the blossoms once they fade to encourage a rebloom later in the growing season, then in the early spring, before new growth begins, trim back any old, tattered foliage to make way for clean fresh growth.
Seldom bothered by Deer and rabbits unless they are truly desperate, Bergenia spreads slowly by way of underground rhizomes that are easy to transplant elsewhere or remove (and present to a friend!). Provide Bergenia in the coldest climates and in containers with a protected location from the worst that winter can throw at them. It is recommended you divide the clumps every 3-5 years to maintain vigor and prevent crowding.
- Full Sun to Heavy Shade Tolerant!
- Widely Adaptable to Many Types of Well-Drained Soil - Even Poor/Salt Conditions
- Highly Adaptable Moist to Average to Occasionally Dry Moisture Needs
- Deadhead For Rebloom & Clean Plant Mounds Early Spring
- Deer, Rabbit & Occasional Drought Tolerant
Plant something different this year with the versatile and adaptable evergreen perennial Winter Glow Pig Squeak Bergenia from Nature Hills! Enjoy a perennial that is brown-thumb-proof for easy gardening every year!
