Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This flax thrives in full sun, needing at least 6 hours of direct light to maintain its deep burgundy color. It can handle partial shade in hotter climates, though less sun often results in the foliage turning more olive or bronze rather than a vibrant red.
  • Soil: It prefers rich, well-draining soil but is quite adaptable to various types. For heavy clay, mix in organic compost to improve drainage, as "wet feet" can lead to root rot; for sandy soils, add peat moss to help retain just enough moisture.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water your Amazing Red New Zealand Flax twice a week to help the roots dive deep into the soil. Once established, this plant is remarkably drought tolerant and only needs supplemental water during extended dry spells. Inconsistent watering can lead to brown, crispy leaf tips, so aim for deep soakings rather than frequent light sprinkles.

Pruning Tips

New Zealand Flax grows from the center, so there is no need for traditional shearing. Simply "groom" the plant by pulling or cutting dead or tattered leaves at the very base in early spring. This keeps the plant looking tidy and allows sunlight to reach the crown, which encourages the growth of fresh, brightly colored blades.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer once in early spring as new growth begins to emerge. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this can stimulate soft growth that is easily damaged by the first frost of winter. Think of it as putting the plant on a healthy diet rather than a growth spurt that it cannot sustain when the weather turns cold.
