From Proven Winners®, the award-winning Rainbow Rhythm® Primal Scream Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Primal Scream'), will steal the show and stand out no matter where it is planted! The huge 8-9 inch, tangerine orange flowers made the Daylily 2003 Stout Medal Winner. This is the highest honor a Daylily can receive, and the first unusual spider-form Daylily to win this award. In fact, the flowers almost resemble bright orange Cattleya Orchids! The main three petals are vibrant deep orange that fade slightly at the base and have a twisted, rippled edge. The three sepal petals are often slimmer and curled with the same rippled petals edge.
With its very impressive and striking hot tangerine color, this daylily makes a garden performance that is most superior! The immense blossoms show off in midsummer on top of the tall, handsome foliage. Add a few stems to bouquets for an exotic flair, or watch as bees, butterflies, and Hummingbirds flit from bloom to bloom! Each new blossom opened fresh for that day, and that day only!
You can count on this vigorous perennial plant, with spectacular blooms, great branching on the scapes, and healthy green foliage throughout the year. This plant is also low-maintenance and adept at thriving in a wide variety of climates and growing zones, from zones 3 through 9. Primal Scream is a Tetraploid Daylily, featuring larger, thicker leaves, stout, and stronger flowers, combined with intense coloration and vigor!
Planting and Application:
Plant this tropical-looking Daylily for vibrant color among shrub borders and modern Cottage gardens, where the 34-inch height when in bloom will stand out among the larger plants when planted in groupings. Must haves in Rock Gardens, cut flower borders, or try mixing into a formal urban courtyard or mixed perennial beds for stand-out coloration that lasts! Tall enough for mid to back-of-the-border applications, this tangerine exotic beauty will hold its own!
Add a Primal Scream to your pool and deck seating pots and planters, or use them in containers as a feature planting or thriller in mixed plantings around your sunny porch and patio! No one will drive past your house with this beacon glowing at the end of your driveway either! The flowers of the Daylily are edible and are a popular colorful addition to any salad. So plant a few around the barbecue or outdoor dining areas for garnish and pretty salad additions within arm's reach while entertaining!
The vase-shaped clumps of long, strappy foliage look fantastic for the remainder of the growing season, adding filler and spillers over retaining walls, planter edges, along pathways and walkways, adding pops of color and facer plant fringe along your foundation plantings and evergreen hedges alike!
For landscapes in xeric and fire-prone areas, this plant is a wonderfully colorful selection to add to your defensible space near your home. It brightens things up and the fleshy roots store loads of water. Go big with these easy-to-grow perennials and plant drifts en masse for maximum color impact in a hurry!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Perennial Daylilies glow and bloom best in full sun, and these herbaceous perennials require little maintenance throughout the year to keep performing their best. Daylilies grow in almost any soil and handle drought to wet soil conditions. Provide moderate moisture while establishing, and after give your plants supplemental moisture during the worst of drought. Add a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch over the soil surface for best results!
Deadhead to encourage a rebloom that lasts for weeks during the summer until the fall. Once the foliage dies back to the ground in the autumn, trim back the leaves and top with compost or refresh the mulch for the winter. Daylilies are susceptible to rust and some other foliage diseases, so removing the foliage before winter prevents the overwintering of disease on the old leaves. Clean the leaves up and dispose of the old foliage each year. It's recommended to divide the root clumps every 3-5 years, or when the number of flower buds and the size of bloom begin to decline.
- Best in Full Sun
- Widely Adaptable - Any Well-Drained Soil
- Moderate Moisture - Low Once Established
- Prune Late Fall, Deadhead Regularly & Divide Every 3-5 Years
- Very Cold Hardy & Heat Tolerant
- Seldom Bothered By Deer, Rabbits, Salt & Pests
Daylilies are some of the easiest plants to grow and are a good choice for any gardener!
