Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Breathtaking Blue Flowers on a Fairytale Vine
Are you ready to make a dramatic change to your home? Do you want something that will have the neighbors talking every spring and is easy to grow, too?
Painted, photographed, and envied for generations, Blue Chinese Wisteria Vine (Wisteria sinensis) is one of the most romantic and beautiful vines in the world! Adding one is a simple way to make a spectacular change to your home!
Every spring, foot-long panicles of blue to lavender flowers drip like tassels from the vine for a month or more! They typically grow 15 to 20 feet tall and each year the stalk gets thicker and more gnarled in a very fairytale fashion! Some vines have been known to grow 65 feet or more with 15-inch trunks at full maturity!
The flower production gets heavier each year too, with the stunning blue flowers completely hiding the rest of the vine in spring. Bringing in the butterflies and hungry hummingbirds to sip nectar. Don't worry, there will be plenty for all to choose from as you gather stems for your bouquets indoors!
First imported to the U.S. in 1816, these beauties have stood the test of time, so you can be sure they will add timeless beauty to your home. Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 5 to 9, these tenacious vines are very fast growing!
Landscape Application:
Whether the Blue Chinese Wisteria is elegantly draped over your garden arbor or framing your front porch, this hardy, healthy vine is bound to bring you pleasure and make your neighbors envious!
The Chinese Blue Wisteria needs sturdy supports to climb on because over time they will become heavy. Plant near a pergola or arbor to create a stunning, fragrant canopy of flowers over your seating areas, shade a reading nook, or perfume your backyard meditation spaces.
The vine's fast growth and cascading blooms will provide shade and beauty, transforming outdoor spaces into serene garden retreats! Go big and create entire outdoor rooms, or backyard sanctuaries as we like to call them, by growing living walls of trellis or Espalier-trained Wisteria vines around your patios, hot tubs, or outdoor dining!
So versatile, you can train your Blue Wisteria as a small tree form by supporting it with a sturdy stake for years until the trunk can support itself! This creates a stunning specimen for your front yard berms and by front doors!
Use Blue Chinese to frame an entrance to a garden gateway. The vine's dramatic flowers and lush foliage will create a welcoming, fragrant focal point for you and your guests to pass through.
Alternately, without support, you can let the vine cascade over a retaining wall, over an unsightly chainlink fence, a stone staircase, or even ramble down a hillside to add a romantic, natural look to the landscape (while secretly slowing erosion, hiding eyesores, and prettying up a utilitarian area!).
Yards are even optional with these small-footprint vines! Pot yours up in an oversized planter with a trellis or obelisk in the center, or in a large container by balcony support and train it to grow along the railing! As the vine grows, there are no suction cups or grabby anchors on these vines that will damage paint or siding!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Plant Wisteria Vines in full sun for the biggest flowering display and the very best growth. Wisteria also grows best when they are planted in well-drained soil and have regular fertility.
Avoid planting directly in your lawn or where lawn fertilizers are sprayed regularly as this can greatly reduce flowering. Instead, create a mulched buffer zone or planting berm, top-dressed 3-4 inches deep, and spread around the entire root zone.
You'll want to use Nature Hills Root Booster during planting for life-long support of the tiny feeder roots. Make sure to give your flowering vine regular moisture access, while drought tolerant, Wisteria flowers best when given consistent watering.
Pruning Wisteria Vines
Wisteria can grow fast and bloom on new wood. Established plants may grow 10 feet or more in a single year. You can certainly keep it much smaller with bi-yearly pruning.
Get the best flowering display with pruning before growth begins in late winter or very early spring. Remove dead or broken branches at this time. For size control, count four buds up along last year's growth, and trim your vine just above the fourth bud, removing excess side shoots.
Prune again just after the first round of spring blooms have faded. This deadheading will sometimes encourage a second, smaller flush of flowers on some varieties.
Invest in a sharp pair of garden shears to get the best performance from your Wisteria. Pruning is necessary for growing gorgeous Wisterias...read more in the #ProPlantTips section.

Wisteria FAQ
How invasive is Blue Moon Wisteria?
Wisteria Vines are vigorous growers, so unmanaged vines can overtake an area, and they have rooting surface runners in optimal conditions.
How long does it take for a Blue Moon Wisteria to bloom?
Wisteria Vines should bloom 3 to 4 years after being established. A Wisteria can be slow to bloom when exposed to less than full sun settings, exposed to excess lawn fertilizer, and moisture access.
