Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Provide at least 6 hours of direct sun daily to ensure the flower spikes remain upright and sturdy. While it handles partial shade, less sun often results in fewer blooms and a leggy habit that may require staking.
  • Soil: This perennial thrives in lean, gritty soil that drains quickly. If you have heavy clay, plant in a raised bed or incorporate fine gravel to prevent the roots from sitting in moisture during the winter.

Watering Requirements

Water your Verbascum once or twice a week during its first growing season to help the taproot reach deep into the soil. Once established, the plant is remarkably drought tolerant and only needs supplemental moisture when the top three inches of soil are dry. Overwatering or inconsistent drainage is the primary cause of crown rot, so it is better to stay on the dry side.

Pruning Tips

Royalty Verbascum blooms on new growth produced during the current season. Cut back the central flower spike once the blossoms fade to encourage the plant to send up smaller secondary stems. This process is like a haircut that redirects energy away from seed production and back into the foliage and subsequent flowers.

Fertilizer Needs

Feed your plants with a light application of balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring just as the basal rosette begins to grow. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers because they stimulate lush, soft foliage at the expense of flower quality. Excessive nitrogen also makes the tall stalks weak and more prone to flopping over in the wind.

Description

Hail To The Verbascum Royalty

  • Pollinator Friendly
  • Deer Tolerant
  • Blooms Late Spring
  • Stunning Purple Flowers

Take a chance on planting a unique plant in your landscape. What a sight to behold and you won’t want to take your eyes off of him!

Verbascum Royalty (Verbascum ‘Royalty’) is a compact perennial with an abundance of graceful spikes smothered with large, stunning purple booms. The foliage is a beautiful dark green held in a low mound which offsets the flowers to perfection!

Verbascum Royalty performs best in full sun in average, dry to medium, well drained soil. He will thrive in poor soil, but it must be well drained. Will do well in inner city environments and is tolerant of urban pollution.

This little beauty is very useful and adaptable. Place him in your beds and borders, gravel gardens, cottage and wildlife gardens. He will look stunning in a container and in a vase for you to enjoy on your table. This plant is self seeding so will endure for years in your garden if allowed.

Royalty is drought tolerant once established. The deer seem to leave this plant alone. He will attract butterflies and hummingbirds so you will enjoy watching them flitter from flower to flower on those hot summer days. Remove the faded bloom spikes to encourage more buds.

In September, cut this perennial back to 3 inches. This will force new vegetative growth at the base which will make this plant stronger to hold all of the new gorgeous flowers that will appear in the spring.

This has a long bloom period starting in late spring to late summer, if properly deadheaded.

Be sure to add this little beauty from Nature Hills Nursery. You won’t regret it!
