Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Porcelain Blue performs best in partial shade, ideally receiving filtered morning sun and protection from the hot afternoon heat. While it can handle more sun in cooler climates, too much direct light will cause the foliage to go dormant early and fade the vibrant blue flower color.
  • Soil: These plants crave rich, organic soil that stays consistently moist but never soggy. If you have heavy clay, mix in plenty of compost or leaf mold to improve drainage, as "wet feet" during the winter will lead to root rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water your Corydalis two to three times a week to keep the soil surface cool and moist while the roots establish. Once mature, the plant is relatively self sufficient but needs supplemental deep watering during summer dry spells to prevent it from entering a premature summer dormancy. Inconsistent moisture often leads to scorched leaf edges and a shorter blooming window.

Pruning Tips

Since this variety blooms on new growth and can rebloom throughout the season, you should deadhead spent flower spikes to encourage a second flush of color. Think of this like a light summer grooming; simply snip the stems back to the foliage line once the blue fades. If the foliage looks ragged after a heatwave, you can cut the entire plant back to an inch above the ground to trigger a fresh, tidy mound of new leaves.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring just as the new fern like leaves begin to emerge from the soil. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer because this encourages tender new growth that will not have time to harden off before the first frost. A single application of compost or a general purpose garden food usually provides all the nutrients needed for a full season of blooms.
