Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Plant your Real Glory Shasta Daisy in a spot that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sun daily. While it can handle some light afternoon shade in very hot climates, full sun ensures the sturdiest stems and the maximum number of those distinct yellow-centered blooms.
  • Soil: These perennials thrive in fertile, well-drained soil that does not stay soggy during the winter months. If you have heavy clay, mix in some organic compost to improve drainage, or plant them in a slightly raised mound to keep the "feet" of the plant from rotting.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water deeply two to three times a week to help the root system expand into the surrounding soil. Once established, these daisies are quite drought-tolerant, but they will produce larger flowers if they receive a consistent inch of water per week. Inconsistent moisture during the peak of summer often leads to smaller, less vibrant blooms and can cause the foliage to yellow prematurely.

Pruning Tips

Since these daisies bloom on new growth produced in the spring, you should cut the spent flower stalks back to the basal foliage throughout the summer to encourage a second flush of flowers. Think of this like a haircut that redirects the plant's energy from seed production back into bloom production. In late autumn or early spring, cut the entire plant down to about 2 or 3 inches above the ground to make way for fresh, vigorous stems.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer in early spring as soon as you see new green growth emerging from the soil. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this encourages soft, leafy growth that is easily damaged by the first frosts of winter. A single application in the spring is usually all these efficient feeders need to power through their long blooming window.

The big long-lasting blooms age well and are carried aloft toward the sun on very strong stems. The butterflies will feel jealous at being upstaged by these fancy blossoms!

Easy-to-care-for REALFLOR® Daisy varieties are very floriferous and feature improved disease resistance. Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 9, these Daisies look more like fancy Mums than their other Daisy family members, but we love them all the same!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Shasta Daisies are hardy perennials that have the most vigorous growth when grown in full sun but can tolerate just a touch of afternoon shade in hotter growing zones (at the cost of the number of blooms). Growing best in well-drained soil with ample organic compost added. It's recommended to water your plants weekly when rainfall is less than an inch, but they will not tolerate excessive moisture or soggy soil in the winter. Provide a good layer of mulch, at least 3-4 inches around the roots, especially in drier climates. Remove faded flower heads to encourage more blooms and prune the clumps back in late fall when the foliage yellows. Clumps can be divided every few years to increase vigor.

  • Best Flowering in Full Sun
  • Moderate Regular Moisture & Appreciates Mulched Beds
  • Dislikes Soggy Winter Soil
  • Well-Drained Organically Enriched Soil
  • Deadhead For Rebloom & Prune Late Autumn
  • Improved Disease Resistance
