Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: For the brightest gold color, plant in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct light). While it tolerates partial shade, the foliage will shift toward a chartreuse or lime green hue rather than the signature glowing yellow.
  • Soil: This cypress thrives in well drained, slightly acidic soil that holds some moisture. If you have heavy clay, plant it in a slight mound or add organic compost to ensure the roots do not sit in stagnant water, which can lead to root rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first two growing seasons, water deeply twice a week to ensure the root system anchors properly. Once established, this evergreen is quite resilient, but it lacks a deep taproot and needs supplemental water during summer dry spells to prevent the delicate needle tips from scorching. Inconsistent moisture often results in interior needle drop as the plant tries to conserve energy.

Pruning Tips

This slow growing conifer naturally maintains a tidy globe shape and rarely requires pruning. If you must trim for size, do so in early spring before new growth begins, but never cut back into the "dead zone" of old wood where no green needles are present.
