Rose of Sharon are typically sold as a shrub, however, our Raspberry Smoothie™ Rose of Sharon "Althea" (Hibiscus syriacus 'DS03RS') has been artfully trained into an ornamental tree! Stunning with tropical-looking flowers this pretty amazing shrub is easy to grow. Now as an ornamental tree that fits into the "gotta have" category!

Raspberry Smoothie™ Althea puts on quite a show from mid-summer into fall. The flowers are extra showy versions of your typical Hibiscus family, but these double (almost triple) blooms closer resemble Carnations or small Peony flowers with a creamy mix of raspberry hues! The fine textured dark green leaves are neatly serrated and stay clean looking all season long.

Imagine a classic, tropical-looking Rose of Sharon covered with massive tropical double pink lavender flowers from mid-summer into fall. The plant is rabbit-resistant and deer tolerant, thriving in the sun throughout USDA growing zones 5-8. Growing with a sturdy, straight single trunk 8-10 feet tall and spreading 4-6 feet wide. Best yet, this is a sterile form and won't be an issue in your environment!

Planting and Application:

Raspberry Smoothie™ tree-form will make quite a statement as a specimen plant in a courtyard or a prestigious spot in your yard so you can enjoy the colorful show. This is a classic specimen and focal point tree-form shrub! Glorious ornamental flowering bushes are elevated next level on those sturdy trunks, allowing you more options to use these low-maintenance plants anywhere in the full-sun garden! Think about how amazing this will look around your patio or in any large container or planter.

Anchor a foundation planting or highlight a berm or Rock Garden in your front yard. Use an allée, row, or zigzag of these fantastic deciduous shrubs as a taller hedge for privacy and screening, while both sides of the hedge will enjoy long-lasting displays of flowers! Butterfly gardens, cottage garden accents, poolside privacy plantings, and softening a building's corner - the choices are endless!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Raspberry Smoothie™ Althea loves a hot, dry location in your yard. Once the plants are established, they are very drought tolerant, requiring little additional water without sacrificing any quality, growth, or flower power. It is an amazingly easy plant to grow, tolerating almost any well-drained soil and any site as long as it is sunny. Pruning can be done in late winter or early spring without sacrificing any flowers as they are born on new growth. Prune before they leaf out and then leave them alone to produce those amazing flowers on the new growth.

  • Full Sun
  • Almost Any Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate Moisture Needs
  • Blooms on New Wood - Prune Late Winter/Early Spring
  • Drought Tolerant
  • Easy to Grow

Tree Form vs. Shrub Form

The details make all the difference in a garden. At Naturehills.com, we understand that little things like what form a plant is can greatly impact how you plan your landscape. So before you buy, don't forget to check which form you're getting.

Tree Form:

These are plants that have one stem coming from the ground. Plants can also be considered single stem when lower branches are removed to raise the height of the branching to a more desired height. Sometimes, you will hear a tree form referred to as a single stem.

Shrub Form:

These are bushy plants with many stems and branchings close to the ground. They are referred to as shrubs or bushes and are often shorter than their tree forms.
