Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Full sun is essential for the best performance. Your White Pillar® needs at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to produce its signature column of white blooms and maintain its tight, upright shape.
  • Soil: These shrubs thrive in well drained soil that is rich in organic matter. If you have heavy clay that stays soggy, plant in a raised mound or add compost to improve drainage, as "wet feet" can lead to root rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water deeply twice a week to help the roots reach deep into the soil. Once established, this Rose of Sharon is quite drought tolerant, but inconsistent moisture during extreme heat can cause the flower buds to drop before they open. Think of consistent watering as the fuel needed to keep the bloom cycle moving smoothly through late summer.

Pruning Tips

This variety blooms on new wood, meaning the flowers grow on the stems that emerge in the current spring. The best time to prune is in late winter or very early spring before you see any green growth. Since this cultivar is naturally narrow, you only need to prune to remove dead wood or to maintain a specific height, similar to giving the plant a light trim to keep its columnar silhouette tidy.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring as the new leaves begin to emerge to support vigorous growth. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this encourages soft, leafy growth that won't have time to harden off before the first frost. This late season "growth spurt" is susceptible to winter kill, which can damage the structure of the plant.

The pure white blooms produce very few seeds. Let them glow for you in the moonlight, and give you a cool-toned visual appeal all day.

Healthy, dark green foliage makes a contrasting foil for the large, tropical-looking blooms. The pristine sophisticated color makes a wonderful partner for other plants.

How to Use White Pillar® Rose of Sharon in the Landscape

Place one near the side of your front door as a durable accent. Those lean, tall good looks will be a terrific feature all year-long.

Try a pair on either side of your garden gate. Every time you pass between them, you'll revel in a grand sense of entrance.

Take this concept and expand on it. Add a double row in a showy allée along the length of your side yard. Why not make a feature out of a boring, ho-hum area?

Spacing these plants is just as versatile as everything else about these cool plants. For a solid screen, measure 18 inches from the center of one plant to the center of the next.

For an allée, increase the spacing between plants to four or five feet. Allow 12 to 15 feet between the rows.

Repeat their use along the back of your perennial or shrub border to produce a very effective backdrop. Extend the height of your hardscape fence with a solid "living fence" for welcome privacy.

Go all out with an eye-catching garden feature by alternating White Pillar with Purple Pillar Rose of Sharon. Go ahead and some fun in your space!

#ProPlantTips for Care

Give them at least four hours of sunshine a day. More sun means more flowers!

Apply a medium amount of water on a regular basis for the best results. Add a three-inch layer of mulch to cover the root system.

New plants need careful attention to water. Once your plants are established, they'll handle a bit of drought. Container-grown plants will always need a medium amount of supplemental water.

White Pillar blooms on new wood, so prune it in early spring. You can shape the sides and tip prune to control the height at that time.

Deer don't prefer the taste, but they are hungry little buggers. If there are deer in your area, apply deer repellent on planting day. Follow reapplication instructions on the label.

Fall in love with the strong structure and flower power of White Pillar® Rose of Sharon. Order yours ASAP, these are a big sell-out risk.
