Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This rose thrives in full sun, requiring at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight daily. While it can tolerate some afternoon shade, you will notice fewer flowers and a higher risk of powdery mildew if it does not get enough light.
  • Soil: Plant in well-drained soil rich in organic matter, such as compost or peat moss. If you have heavy clay, plant in a slight mound to keep the roots from sitting in water, or mix in some coarse sand to improve drainage in sandy spots.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, provide about one inch of water per week to help the root system get established. Once mature, this rose is quite drought tolerant, but inconsistent watering during high heat can lead to smaller blooms or premature leaf drop. Always water at the base of the plant to keep the foliage dry and prevent fungal issues.

Pruning Tips

Since these roses bloom on new wood, the best time to prune is in early spring just as the new buds begin to swell. Think of this like a refreshing haircut; cutting the stems back by about one third encourages vigorous new growth and a heavy flush of flowers. Removing any dead or crossing branches at this time helps increase airflow through the center of the shrub.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release rose fertilizer in early spring and again in mid summer to fuel the continuous blooming cycle. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the fall, as this encourages tender new growth that will likely be damaged by the first hard freeze.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Oso Easy® Shrub Roses need full sun and good air circulation to do their best. They flourish in full sun with at least six hours of direct sunlight a day. They'll also need good air circulation and well-drained soil. If you have soggy soil, you'll need to elevate the planting. Bring in additional soil to create a raised bed or planting mound for best results. Be sure to include Nature Hills Root Booster with your order. These symbiotic ingredients help protect your investment and support the tiny feeder roots over the entire life of your plant.

Give them a moderate amount of supplemental moisture on a regular basis. The goal is to keep the soil moist, but not wet. Don't forget to water your container-grown plants! Add a three to four-inch layer of mulch to cover the root system but pull it back away from touching the stems directly.

Rake and bag the fallen leaves out from underneath your Roses in late fall for proper hygiene. In early spring, prune them back to six inches, using an angled cut just above a swollen bud. Feed Roses a high-quality, slow-release fertilizer in early spring and mid-summer. Follow the directions on the label to support bloom production.
