Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Full sun is essential for the best performance. Aim for at least six hours of direct sunlight to ensure the most vibrant orange blooms and a dense, bushy habit. While it can handle partial shade, you will notice fewer flowers and a more leggy growth pattern.
  • Soil: This quince is adaptable but thrives in well drained soil. If you have heavy clay, plant it in a slightly raised mound to improve drainage and prevent "wet feet." For sandy soils, mix in some organic compost to help hold onto moisture and nutrients.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, water your Double Take Orange® Quince deeply twice a week to help the roots reach deep into the soil. Once established, this shrub is remarkably drought tolerant, though a consistent deep soak during the hottest weeks of summer prevents the foliage from dropping early. If watering is inconsistent while the plant is young, you may see stunted growth and fewer flower buds setting for the following spring.

Pruning Tips

Since this variety blooms on old wood, you should only prune immediately after the spring flowering cycle is finished. This timing allows the plant to grow the stems that will carry next year's flower buds. Think of it like a haircut that shapes the plant and removes any dead or crossing branches to improve air circulation, which keeps the inner foliage healthy.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring just as new growth begins to emerge. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer or fall, as this encourages tender new growth that won't have time to harden off before the first frost. This late season growth is easily damaged by freezing temperatures, which can invite disease or dieback.
