Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This variety thrives in anything from full sun to full shade. For the most vibrant red color and maximum flower production, aim for about 4 to 6 hours of morning sun with protection from the harsh afternoon heat.
  • Soil: Little Redhead prefers rich, organic soil that mimics a woodland floor. If you have heavy clay, mix in several inches of compost or aged bark to improve drainage, as this plant will rot if its feet stay in standing water.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, check the soil twice a week and water deeply whenever the top inch feels dry to the touch to help the roots dive deep. Once established, this perennial is surprisingly drought tolerant, but inconsistent moisture during a dry spell will often lead to smaller flower spikes and a shorter blooming window.

Pruning Tips

Since Indian Pinks bloom on new growth produced in the spring, you should avoid cutting them back in the winter to protect the crown from the cold. Instead, wait until you see new green shoots emerging in early spring to trim away the old, brown stems from the previous year. This "spring cleaning" makes room for fresh growth and prevents old debris from trapping excess moisture against the plant.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer once in early spring just as the new growth appears to fuel the upcoming bloom cycle. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers in mid to late summer because this can force tender new growth that will not have time to harden off before the first frost.
