The Golden Vicary Privet bush (Ligustrum x vicaryi) is a large-scale, hardy broadleaf-evergreen shrub with dense branches and tiny foliage that is lovely both as a sheared formal hedge, or informal naturally rounded ornamental!
Golden Vicary is valued for its golden-green leaves that gleam in the sunlight! This lovely golden-leafed Privet has a vase-like or upright rounded shape. Aromatic, tubular-shaped, white flowers arrive in late spring. The flowers on the Golden Vicary Privet attract butterflies and other pollinators!
Not only do birds love nesting and taking shelter in these dense evergreens, but when late spring and into summer, the blooms change to small, dark, berry-like fruits these feathered friends dive in to gobble up! They add a layer of contrast against the bright foliage of unsheared shrubs. Shearing will remove most of these berries but create a spectacular formal form with ease!
Members of the Olive family, the Golden Vicary grows tall and round. You can train these shrubs to any size or shape that suits your landscape best! Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 5 to 8, this hybrid Ligustrum will grow up to a foot a year and is a sterile and non-invasive plant!
Planting and Application:
They would make a great accent shrub as well as year-round bright green borders, privacy screens, and hedges. This is a great plant to use for screening. Imagine a pretty, living green wall around your pool deck or outdoor dining room.
Shear or prune smaller, and create a seamless foundation hedge in front of your home with taller shrubs between windows, and smaller pruned Golden Vicary shrubs shaped to below your window height to not block your view. Then bookmark your foundation hedge with shaped or topiary taller Golden Vicary at the corners and astride either side of your front entry stairs! You'll easily achieve a seamless effect!
Continue the theme by including these shrubs throughout your front yard landscaping as property division and landscape backdrops to maintain your landscape's continuity and achieve incredible curb appeal!
Left to grow naturally, these tidy and fluffy chartreuse shrubs become 8-10 foot tall and wide privacy shrubs that provide year-round screening! Create garden room walls that wrap you in bright and colorful greenery, reduce noise, block wind, and provide high, property division! Screen off your barbecue pit, hot tub, poolside seating areas, or encircle your patio with lush seclusion.
Trim a single specimen as a fancy topiary or create a formal garden with tightly clipped shrubs planted 6-8 feet apart for a seamless hedge! Light up the sun garden with a backdrop of Golden Vicary, groupings for the birds and butterflies, or a single focal point to soften the corner of an outbuilding's corner.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Privet isn't just an attractive and adaptable plant, it's also winter hardy, drought tolerant, transplants easily, and is long-lived! It's incredibly cold hardy, and can thrive in both full sun or some partial shade. Well-drained soil is best, but these are widely adaptable shrubs in any kind of soil type as long as they have good drainage. Water carefully to establish and during periods of drought.
Privet tolerates dry soil once it is established, so get your new installations established successfully, plant with Nature Hills Root Booster for lifelong symbiotic support, and regular moisture access during that first year. Provide a 3-4 inch deep top-dressing of arborist mulch.
Wait to prune until late spring, letting these shrubs flower before pruning, that way your pollinators will be well-fed. If you want to feed the birds in the autumn, then choose to renewal prune every 3-5 years. Remove the older, fatter branches out at the main trunk or from the root zone.
If flowers and fruit are not your concern, prune this deciduous Privet any time of year. Shearing after the first flush of growth and again if needed in mid-summer. When shearing and training your plants into a hedge, always be sure the lowest part of the plant is the widest part. Keep the tops a bit more narrow than the bottom, to encourage foliage all the way to the ground.
If you have an overgrown shrub and want to start over fresh, if needed, simply cut all plants down to 2-3 inches tall and allow the plants to re-grow from the roots.
