Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: For the best growth and strongest wood, give your Streetspire® Oak at least 6 hours of direct sunlight every day. While it can handle a bit of afternoon shade, full sun ensures that signature narrow, upright shape stays dense and tight.
  • Soil: This oak is a champion in heavy clay or urban soils, but it thrives best in well drained loam. If you are dealing with sandy soil, mix in some organic compost at planting to help the roots hold onto moisture while the tree settles in.

Watering Requirements

During the first two growing seasons, water your tree deeply twice a week to ensure the root ball never completely dries out. Once established, this variety is quite drought tolerant, though a long dry spell can cause the leaves to brown at the edges or drop early in the fall. Consistent moisture during the heat of summer ensures the foliage stays a vibrant dark green until the autumn color shift.

Pruning Tips

Because this tree naturally grows in a narrow "columnar" shape, it requires very little pruning to maintain its form. If you need to remove a stray or damaged branch, do so in late winter while the tree is dormant to prevent sap bleeding and reduce the risk of pests. Think of this like a light trim rather than a haircut; you are simply removing the "fuzz" to keep the silhouette clean and the structure strong.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring just as the leaf buds begin to swell to fuel the seasons new growth. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer or fall, as this encourages tender new growth that won't have time to harden off before the first freeze. This soft growth is easily damaged by winter temperatures and can invite disease into the main trunk.

This gorgeous cultivar is a modern take on a landscape classic. The desirable Sweetspire® Oak Tree (Quercus robur x alba 'JFS-KW1QX') stays slim and lean…with plenty of interest year-round!

The attractive rounded lobed foliage remains powdery mildew-free in summer and burnishes to a beautiful rustic red for fall color. The upright sweeping branch structure of Sweetspire® truly draws the eye!

With wide crotch angles, the Sweetspire® Oak easily rides through fierce winds and resists storm damage. You'll also love how the leaves fall cleanly from the tree late in the season for easy cleanup. These Oaks grow surprisingly quickly as young trees!

Cold-hardy throughout USDA hardiness zones 4-8, these columnar Oak trees grow 40 - 45 feet tall and just 12 - 14 feet wide! The strong limbs resist snow-load, heavy winds and storms!

Landscape Application:

As you might imagine, Streetspire® Oak makes an excellent choice to include in street plantings. Alternate with other columnar trees like Shawnee Brave® Bald Cypress and Armstrong/Armstrong Gold® Maple for a bio-diverse approach that protects your overall investment

Try a pair of these stately Oak trees on either side of your front entryway. No one ever regrets planting a dignified Oak tree, after all! Streetspire® Oak is a rugged, durable shade tree that fits beautifully in small space gardens. It will add to your property value and can easily be used to create an effective privacy screen.

Repeat the use of this stunning selection in mixed plantings, as well. Their rusty red fall color and arresting profile will make your guests stop and stare!

  • Rounded Lobed Foliage
  • Strong Upswept Limbs
  • Slim Columnar Form
  • Showy Rustic Red Foliage Drops In Fall
  • Narrow Hedges, Street Trees & Space-Saving Specimens

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Plant Oak Trees in full sun with at least six hours of light a day. Provide an even schedule of supplemental water to keep them happy, healthy, and stress-free. Provide regular deep waterings to establish a deep root system, making established trees drought tolerant. We highly recommend that you add a three-inch layer of mulch and spread it out to several feet past the canopy; pulling it back from touching the trunk. Prune your Oak in late winter to remove broken or wayward branches. Luckily, Streetspire® Oak features great genetics and should rarely need much corrective action.

  • Need Full Sun
  • Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate Moisture Needs
  • Prune When Dormant
  • Low-Maintenance Deciduous Tree
