Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This tree needs at least six hours of direct sun daily to maintain a healthy canopy and produce a good nut crop. While it can survive in partial shade, the growth rate slows down and the tree may develop a sparse, leggy appearance.
  • Soil: Plant in well-drained, sandy or rocky soil to mimic its natural upland habitat. If you are dealing with heavy clay, mix in some organic compost or plant on a slight mound to ensure the deep taproot does not sit in stagnant water.

Watering Requirements

During the first two years, provide a deep soaking twice a week to help the taproot establish itself deep in the ground. Mature trees are very drought tolerant, but providing extra water during long dry spells prevents early leaf drop and maintains wood strength. Inconsistent moisture during the establishment phase often results in leaf scorch or stunted terminal growth.

Pruning Tips

Limit pruning to the late winter dormant season to minimize sap loss and keep the tree’s energy focused on spring growth. Focus on removing dead wood and any branches with narrow, V-shaped crotches to ensure the heavy wood has a strong structural attachment to the trunk. Think of this like a structural tune-up that prevents the tree from splitting during heavy ice or wind storms.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring just as the new buds begin to swell. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers after mid-summer because they stimulate soft growth that cannot harden off before winter. This late-season growth is easily damaged by the first hard freeze, which can create entry points for wood-boring insects.

Description

The hardy and majestic Black Hickory Tree (Carya texana) is a fantastic deciduous native hardwood tree that can reach a variable height of 60-80 feet but have been documented growing 140 feet in height. Mature trees can spread to 65 - 80 feet wide, ranging because of their wide ranging native genetics and based on growing conditions. Hickory trees feature gorgeous green foliage similar to other trees in the majestic Walnut family, shading your world all growing season. The green compound foliage is followed by an incredibly vibrant yellow fall color that is an autumn treat!

Adaptable and cold-hardy, these living bird-friendly trees cast deep shade with long pinnate leaves and yellowish-green catkins that become edible fall nuts if your tree is female! The setting sun shines through these trees and sets them alight, setting off the dark, furrowed bark that is the namesake for these trees!

Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 5 through 9, these drought-tolerant trees are fantastic wildlife sanctuaries. Highly adaptable native trees thrive in the hottest, xeric, and tough sites while being venerable hotels and buffets for wildlife, birds, and butterflies! Since these trees are either male or female, be sure to plant in groups and create your very own nut tree grove - for both yourself and your wildlife!

Planting and Application:

The impressive Black Hickory tree is the classic lawn specimen and bird sanctuary! Housing flocks of birds and wildlife, while mature trees support entire ecosystems among their branches. Smaller than the average Hickory and tougher in drier conditions and heat.

These trees add lush shade and impressive form to the landscape! A single specimen will set your front yard alight each fall and fill your backyard with birdsong. You'll enjoy reduced cooling costs and increased home equity with a large, long-lived tree like a Hickory planted on the grounds.

Plant in large open spaces and big backyards so a single tree can shade the entire area. So plant your juglone-tolerant or native perennial shade gardens beneath these limbs without worry! Or just use the dense shade for your hammock or favorite reading chair!

  • Long Bright Green Compound Foliage
  • Tall Open Canopy & Straight Trunk
  • Edible Nuts For Baked Goods
  • Gorgeous Golden Fall Color!
  • Wildlife, Bird & Butterfly Habitat
  • Magnificent Shade, Lawn & Specimen Tree

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Hickory Trees need full sun locations and should be planted in rich well-drained locations. These hardy natives adapt to a wide range of conditions and soil types as well as being drought-resistant. Prune in late winter to very early spring as a young tree to maintain a single stem leader, little pruning is needed after that. Mulch the root zone to hold in moisture and insulate the roots. Water young trees regularly while establishing, but after, these deer-resistant trees are adaptable to very moist conditions and even occasional drought.

  • Full Sun Native Trees
  • Adaptable to Most Well-Drained Soils
  • Widely Adaptable High to Low Moisture
  • Prune When Dormant - Late Winter/Early Spring
  • Deer & Drought Tolerant
