Planting & Care

Where to Plant

Sunlight: Rise Up Emberays® needs at least six hours of direct sun each day, and more is better. Fewer than six hours will result in reduced blooming and foliage that is more susceptible to disease, which works against everything this variety was bred to do.

Soil: This rose adapts to a wide range of soil types as long as drainage is good. It grows best in slightly acidic, moist, well-drained soil with a pH around 6.0-6.5. If your soil is heavy clay, work in compost and coarse grit to improve drainage, or plant on a slight slope. Avoid low spots where water pools after rain.

Watering Requirements

Water deeply once or twice a week during the first growing season to help the root system establish. Once settled in, Rise Up Emberays® is reasonably resilient but performs best with consistent moisture during hot, dry stretches. Avoid watering foliage from above, especially in the evening, as wet leaves overnight can invite fungal issues even on this disease-resistant variety.

Pruning Tips

This rose blooms on new wood, so spring pruning actually encourages more flowers. Each early spring, just as new buds begin to emerge on the canes, cut the plant back by about one-third of its total height, making each cut just above a thick, healthy bud. Remove any spindly or crossing canes entirely. If you are training it as a climber, use plant ties or soft wire to secure new canes to your support structure rather than expecting them to grip on their own.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a granular rose fertilizer or a balanced fertilizer with a 4-6-4 ratio in early spring when you prune, and again in late spring and early summer if you want to push maximum bloom production. Stop fertilizing by mid-July so the plant can begin hardening off for winter. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers that push excessive leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

Description

Rise Up Emberays® Climbing Rose (Rosa x 'Bozfra321') is the kind of rose that makes people stop and ask what it is. From early summer well into fall, it produces clusters of big, ruffled blooms in a bold mix of orange and pink with a sunny yellow center, all backed by some of the cleanest, glossiest dark green foliage you will find on any rose. It is part of the Rise Up® series from Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Shrubs, developed by renowned UK rose breeder Chris Warner specifically to bring easy-care, disease-resistant performance to the climbing rose category.

A Mini Climber with Maximum Impact

What makes Rise Up Emberays® a standout in its class is its compact, manageable habit. At 3-5 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide, it is what Proven Winners calls a "mini climber," which means it delivers the drama of a climbing rose without the need for a massive structure or aggressive pruning schedule. Train it up a trellis, obelisk, fence post, or decorative column and it becomes a vertical focal point that very few other plants can match. It also performs beautifully as a freestanding shrub in a border or in a large container on a patio.

Continuous Blooms Without the Fuss

Unlike old-fashioned climbing roses that put on one spectacular flush in late spring and then call it a season, Rise Up Emberays® keeps going. The flowers repeat rapidly all the way until frost without any deadheading on your part. Bloom color shifts slightly as each flower ages, creating a warm layered effect of orange, sherbet, and yellow-gold at any given moment. The sweet, moderate fragrance is an added bonus when the breeze picks up near a patio or garden path.

Built for the Real World

This rose was bred for real gardens, not ideal conditions. Its glossy foliage resists blackspot and other common rose diseases far better than older varieties, meaning you can skip the spray schedule that once made rose growing feel like a chore. Butterflies and bees find the open blooms easy to access, and the flowers cut beautifully for indoor arrangements, lasting well in a vase. Whether you are a seasoned rosarian or growing your first climbing rose, Rise Up Emberays® earns its place every single season.
