Planting & Care

Where to Plant

Sunlight: Aim for at least six hours of direct sun daily for the best flowering and the strongest fragrance. Plants in partial shade (four to six hours) will still bloom, but expect fewer flowers and a lighter scent. A spot with morning sun and afternoon shade is a good compromise in hotter climates.

Soil: Illuminati Spice® is adaptable to most soil types, including clay and alkaline soils, as long as drainage is adequate. It grows best in organically rich, moist, well-draining soil. Work a few inches of compost into the planting area at installation to give it a strong start, and avoid spots where water pools after rain.

Watering Requirements

Water deeply once or twice a week during the first growing season to help roots establish. Once settled in, Illuminati Spice® is drought tolerant and only needs supplemental watering during extended dry stretches. Avoid consistently wet soil, especially in heavy clay, as poor drainage over time can lead to root stress and decline.

Pruning Tips

Illuminati Spice® blooms on old wood, meaning this year's flowers form on stems that grew last year. Prune immediately after flowering in early summer if shaping is needed, and you will not sacrifice next season's blooms. Avoid fall or spring pruning, which removes the flower buds already set. Light shaping right after bloom is usually all this naturally tidy shrub requires.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced granular shrub fertilizer or a product formulated for flowering shrubs in early spring just as new growth begins. One application per year is sufficient. Avoid over-fertilizing with high-nitrogen products, which push lush leafy growth at the expense of flowers and can reduce the plant's characteristic fragrance.

Description

Old-Fashioned Fragrance, Modern Garden Performance

If you have ever caught the scent of a classic mock orange on a warm June breeze and wished you could fit one in your yard, Philadelphus coronarius 'SMNPSDW' is exactly what you have been waiting for. Illuminati Spice® Mock Orange from the Proven Winners® ColorChoice® collection takes everything beloved about this old garden shrub and packages it into a refined, compact form that earns its space in today's smaller landscapes.

In early summer, the shrub erupts with clusters of large, fully doubled white flowers that carry a genuine citrus-orange blossom fragrance, rich and warm, exactly the way a classic mock orange should smell. Each bloom is layered and frilly, strikingly showy up close and beautiful from a distance against the deep, glossy green foliage.

A Shrub That Looks Good All Season

Beyond the bloom period, Illuminati Spice® maintains its clean, upright habit without looking ragged or overgrown the way older mock orange varieties tend to do. The thick, dark green foliage holds up through summer heat and into fall without browning or dropping prematurely, giving the shrub genuine three-season interest. The upright, 4-5 ft form is disciplined enough for formal foundation plantings and relaxed enough for mixed cottage-style borders.

How to Use It in Your Landscape

Plant Illuminati Spice® where the fragrance can be enjoyed, near a deck, patio, path, or entry where foot traffic will release the scent. It works beautifully as a low informal hedge, a specimen plant in a mixed border, or as a container thriller on a large porch. Bees and butterflies find the flowers irresistible in early summer, adding wildlife value during peak bloom.

It pairs naturally with late spring bloomers like spirea and viburnum, and its clean foliage serves as a handsome backdrop for summer perennials like coneflower, salvia, and ornamental grasses once the flowers have faded.

Why Illuminati Spice® Stands Apart

Older mock orange cultivars were notoriously unpredictable with their fragrance and prone to a leggy, unkempt look by midsummer. Illuminati Spice® was bred and trialed specifically to deliver consistent, true fragrance, bigger and more abundant blooms, and foliage that stays attractive across all three growing seasons. The compact 4-5 ft size makes it a practical choice where traditional mock oranges, which can reach eight feet or more, simply won't fit.

Whether you are recreating a nostalgic garden memory or discovering mock orange for the first time, Illuminati Spice® delivers the full experience in a well-behaved, garden-ready package.
