Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Plant your Verbascum in a spot that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sun daily. While it can tolerate light afternoon shade, full sun ensures the sturdiest stems and the most intense "plum" color in the blooms.
  • Soil: This perennial thrives in lean, well-drained soil that isn't too rich or heavy. If you have heavy clay, plant it in a raised bed or incorporate fine gravel to improve drainage, as "wet feet" in winter is the fastest way to lose this plant.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water deeply once or twice a week to help the taproot establish itself in the surrounding soil. Once mature, Plum Smokey is remarkably drought tolerant and prefers to dry out between waterings. Avoid over-watering or inconsistent moisture, which can lead to floppy stems and a shorter lifespan for the crown.

Pruning Tips

Since this variety blooms on new wood produced during the current season, you should deadhead the spent flower spikes promptly to encourage a second flush of blooms. In late autumn or early spring, cut the foliage back to the ground to make room for the new basal rosette to emerge.
