Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Plant in full sun for at least 6 to 8 hours daily to ensure strong stems and prolific flowering. While it handles light afternoon shade in hotter climates, too much shade results in floppy growth and fewer purple-centered blooms.
  • Soil: This perennial thrives in lean, well drained soil that mimics its native rocky habitats. If you have heavy clay, plant in a raised bed or incorporate organic compost to improve drainage, as "wet feet" during winter is the quickest way to lose this plant.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water twice a week to help the roots dive deep into the soil. Once established, Dark Eyes Verbascum is remarkably drought tolerant and only needs supplemental water during extended dry spells. Overwatering or inconsistent moisture can lead to crown rot or diminished flower spikes, so it is better to err on the dry side.

Pruning Tips

This plant primarily blooms on new growth, so you should remove the spent flower spikes promptly to encourage a second flush of blooms later in the season. Think of it like a deadheading haircut that prevents the plant from putting energy into seed production. In late autumn or early spring, cut the tattered foliage back to the basal rosette to tidy the plant for the new season.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a light application of a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring as new growth appears. Avoid high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer because they stimulate soft, lush growth that is easily damaged by the first frost. Because this plant prefers "hungry" soil, one modest feeding a year is more than enough to keep it happy.

Description

Behind Those Verbascum Dark Eyes

  • Gorgeous Creamy Yellow Flowers with Maroon Centers
  • Pollinator Friendly
  • Deer Tolerant
  • Blooms Late Spring

Take a bow then take a seat. Pat yourself on the back for planting this gorgeous little plant in your landscape. What a sight to behold and you won’t want to take your eyes off of her!

Verbascum Dark Eyes (Verbascum x 'Dark Eyes') is a compact perennial with an abundance of graceful spikes smothered with large creamy yellow flowers with maroon centers. The foliage is a beautiful grey-green held in a low rosette which offsets the flowers to perfection!

Dark Eyes performs best in full sun in average, dry to medium, well drained soil. She will tolerate poor soil, but it must be well drained. Planted in fertile soil will have this perennial growing taller which may require staking.

This little beauty is very useful and adaptable. Place her in your beds and borders, gravel gardens, cottage and wildlife gardens. She will look stunning in a container and in a vase for you to enjoy on your table.

Dark Eyes is drought tolerant once established. The deer seem to leave this plant alone. She will attract butterflies and hummingbirds so you will enjoy watching them flitter from flower to flower on those hot summer days. Remove the faded bloom spikes to encourage more buds.

In September, cut this perennial back to 3 inches. This will force new vegetative growth at the base which will make this plant stronger to hold all of the new gorgeous flowers that will appear in the spring.

This has a long bloom period starting in late spring to late summer, if properly deadheaded.

Be sure to add this little beauty from Nature Hills Nursery. You won’t regret it!
