Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This perennial thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily. While it can handle a bit of afternoon shade in sweltering climates, too much shade results in leggy stems and fewer of those signature golden blooms.
  • Soil: Zagreb Coreopsis prefers lean, well drained soil rather than rich, heavy loam. If you have heavy clay, mix in some organic compost or plant in a raised mound to prevent "wet feet" which can lead to root rot during the winter.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water twice a week to help the roots establish deep in the soil. Once mature, this plant is exceptionally drought tolerant and usually only needs a drink during prolonged dry spells. Inconsistent watering or overwatering often leads to floppy stems and less vibrant foliage.

Pruning Tips

Since these flowers bloom on new wood, the best time to prune is in early spring before new growth emerges. You can also give the plant a "haircut" by shearing off the top few inches after the first heavy flush of flowers fades. This encourages a second round of blooms and keeps the mounded shape looking tidy through the autumn.

Fertilizer Needs

Use a balanced, slow release fertilizer once in early spring as the first green shoots appear. Avoid high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer because this encourages soft, leafy growth that is easily damaged by the first frost. Most of the time, a simple layer of compost around the base of the plant provides all the nutrients it needs.

With a deeper golden-yellow flower on a more compact plant than other Tickseed, this sunny flower readily reblooms! The bright ray petals around a tufted center seem to shine in the sunlight.

The lacy, fine-textured foliage is a wonderful deep-green, forming rounded, spreading clumps of even branching. Remaining lovely until frost when these herbaceous perennials die back to the ground. Zagreb is a little shorter than the rest of the Coreopsis family. Meaning you can always fit one or two into your garden!

And your pollinators and butterfly population will thank you! Flocking in droves to these sunny blooms, they are a nectar boon for hungry bees that desperately need our help! Just as hardy and tolerant as their native cousins, these tough plants can handle the heat, sun, cold and poor soil.

How to Use Zagreb Coreopsis In The Landscape

These are full sun perennials and are a great choice for poor, rocky soils. Tough plants when used as a mass planting in tricky locations along the roadside ‘hell-strip’ or your driveway. But graceful enough to line paths and walkways with misty greenery and yellow blooms.

Incorporate into mixed borders and as edging along your other plantings where the fine texture and compactness provides a clean, finishing touch at the front of your landscaping beds.

Use as definition and as a low hedge to provide a visual barrier along roadsides and sidewalks. Their hardiness and love of the sun, plus the neat mounds Zagreb forms, make them wonderful additions to Rock gardens and Cottage gardens.

Small cut flowers, you can add these as filler to both your bouquets as well as in containers and planters! Zagreb should be planted in full sun and looks great on sunny patios, porches and balconies!

Coreopsis Zagreb looks great with any type of grass or other fine-textured perennial. Fantastic in naturalized, prairie areas wildflower gardens.

No garden should be without it and with its diminutive size, you'll easily find a place for it!

#ProPlantTips For Care

It is recommended you deadhead the spent flowers, by cutting them back early and late summer to extend the bloom period and promote a fall flush of blooms. By pruning to the ground each year in early spring, this perennial will produce all new fresh growth from the roots.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I care for Zagreb Coreopsis, including watering and fertilizing?

  • Zagreb Coreopsis thrives with minimal care once established, tolerating drought, poor soil, and neglect. Water regularly the first season, then only during extended dry spells. Skip fertilizer as rich soil reduces flowering. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continuous flowering through October.

Is Zagreb Coreopsis reliably perennial, or does it die out after a few years?

  • Zagreb Coreopsis is a long-lived perennial that forms reliable, spreading clumps year after year. This hardy threadleaf variety dies back to ground level each winter but returns stronger each spring. Expect decades of performance with minimal care when planted in full sun.

Can Zagreb Coreopsis survive cold winters in zone 3?

  • Zagreb Coreopsis is typically hardy to zone 4, making zone 3 winters potentially too harsh for reliable survival. While described as "cold hardy," this compact perennial performs best in zones 4-9. Consider providing extra winter protection or choosing a hardier native alternative for zone 3 gardens.

Is Zagreb Coreopsis deer resistant?

  • Zagreb Coreopsis is generally deer resistant due to its fine, lacy foliage texture that deer typically avoid. This tough perennial's threadlike leaves and bitter taste make it an unappealing choice for browsing wildlife. Plant it in sunny borders where deer pressure is a concern for reliable summer-to-fall blooms.

How is Zagreb Coreopsis shipped—bare root, potted, or plugs?

  • Zagreb Coreopsis ships as potted plants from Nature Hills. These compact perennials arrive ready to plant in your sunny garden spots. Plant them in full sun for best blooming performance from June through October.

Will Zagreb Coreopsis spread aggressively or stay compact?

  • Zagreb Coreopsis forms neat, rounded spreading clumps without becoming invasive. This compact variety stays well-behaved in the garden while slowly expanding to fill its space over time. Plant 12-18 inches apart for borders or let it naturalize in wildflower areas.
