Where to Plant

Sunlight: This Hellebore is incredibly versatile, thriving in partial shade to full shade. While it can tolerate some sun, especially in cooler climates, it performs best with protection from harsh afternoon rays to prevent leaf scorch and maintain its deep coloration.
Soil: Plant in rich, well-draining soil that mimics a forest floor. If you are working with heavy clay or sandy soil, amend it generously with compost or organic matter to improve moisture retention and drainage, as soggy roots can be fatal.

Watering Requirements

Keep the soil consistently moist—like a wrung-out sponge—while the plant establishes its root system during the first year. Once established, Anna's Red is surprisingly drought-tolerant, though consistent moisture during dry spells will keep the evergreen foliage looking lush and support better blooming.

Pruning Tips

You should prune in late winter or very early spring, just before the new flower stalks begin to push through the soil. Simply cut back the old, tattered leaves from the previous year down to the base; this tidies the plant and ensures the spectacular new blooms are fully visible rather than hidden behind damaged foliage.

Fertilizer Needs

With marbled venation and tinged leaves and stems, these are lovely surprises, especially after a long winter. Evergreen in mild winters, these darling blooms form delightful clumps of foliage with clusters of blooms facing down shyly. Early pollinators welcome the early nectar source and you will enjoy the burst of color, sometimes growing right through the spring snow!
