Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This Hellebore is incredibly versatile, thriving in partial shade to full shade. While it can tolerate some sun, especially in cooler climates, it performs best with protection from harsh afternoon rays to prevent leaf scorch and maintain its deep coloration.
  • Soil: Plant in rich, well-draining soil that mimics a forest floor. If you are working with heavy clay or sandy soil, amend it generously with compost or organic matter to improve moisture retention and drainage, as soggy roots can be fatal.

Watering Requirements

Keep the soil consistently moist—like a wrung-out sponge—while the plant establishes its root system during the first year. Once established, Anna's Red is surprisingly drought-tolerant, though consistent moisture during dry spells will keep the evergreen foliage looking lush and support better blooming.

Pruning Tips

You should prune in late winter or very early spring, just before the new flower stalks begin to push through the soil. Simply cut back the old, tattered leaves from the previous year down to the base; this tidies the plant and ensures the spectacular new blooms are fully visible rather than hidden behind damaged foliage.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges to support the season's blooms and foliage. Avoid fertilizing late in the fall, as this can push soft, tender growth that won't have time to harden off before winter freezes.

The earliest blooms of sultry purplish red, the Frostkiss® Anna's Red Lenten Rose (Helleborus Frostkiss® Anna's Red) will erupt onto the early spring landscape with blushing red and green stems that are soon followed by nodding blossoms with yellow centers!

With marbled venation and tinged leaves and stems, these are lovely surprises, especially after a long winter. Evergreen in mild winters, these darling blooms form delightful clumps of foliage with clusters of blooms facing down shyly. Early pollinators welcome the early nectar source and you will enjoy the burst of color, sometimes growing right through the spring snow!

Anna's Red Hellebore is container-sized and will naturalize areas when allowed. Natural woodland beauties, these darling blooms tolerate a wide range of climates and conditions, so they’ll be sure to make themselves at home anywhere in your landscape!

Planting and Application:

Anna's Red Lenten Rose looks like it should grow in fairy gardens and in wildflower fields, the nodding blushed blooms adding cheerful color to beds, edge borders and pathways, or playfully ramble through a perennial garden, before shrinking from the summer's heat to let summer perennials and shrubs take over. Plant among early spring ephemeral blooms and bulbs for a playful spring display!

Lenten Rose are as happy in the garden as they are adding sultry color to containers and mixed planters! Add to Rock gardens, Perennial and Cutting borders so your pollinators can enjoy these blossoms while you bring a few in for an early spring bouquet!

  • Purplish Red Blossoms & Pale Yellow Centers
  • Tinged Stems, Leaves & Veins
  • Early Spring Blooms
  • Cut Flowers, Containers, Edging, Naturalizing & Specimen
  • Highly Adaptable & Tolerant Plants

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Hellebore are adaptable little blossoms that thrive in cool temperatures and almost any kind of sun! Preferring full sun in colder climates and shade in hot growing zones, they are very adaptable plants. Provide a moderately moist, slightly acidic environment that’s always very well-drained.

  • Full Sun, Part Sun & Full Shade
  • Slightly Acidic Conditions
  • Mulch Well to Insulate & Hold Moisture
  • Very Cold Hardy
