Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This juniper thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily to maintain its dense, vibrant foliage. While it can handle some light afternoon shade, too much shade often leads to a "leggy" or sparse appearance and may dull the color intensity.
  • Soil: It prefers well drained soil and is highly adaptable to various pH levels, making it a reliable choice for rocky or lean sites. If you have heavy clay, mix in some organic compost at planting time to improve drainage and prevent the roots from sitting in soggy conditions.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, water your Wisconsin Juniper deeply twice a week to ensure the root system becomes fully established. Once mature, this variety is exceptionally drought tolerant and rarely needs supplemental water unless your area is experiencing an extended heat wave. Inconsistent watering during the establishment phase can lead to browning at the center of the plant or stunted growth.

Pruning Tips

This evergreen typically requires very little pruning because it naturally maintains a tidy, spreading habit. If you need to manage its size, do so in early spring before new growth begins, as it produces new needles on old wood but lacks dormant buds on older, leafless stems. Think of it like a light trim rather than a heavy haircut; only remove the soft, outer tips to encourage a thicker carpet of foliage without cutting back into the bare "dead zone" in the center.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release evergreen fertilizer once in early spring to fuel the season's growth. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer or fall, as this can force tender new growth that won't have time to harden off before the first frost. This late season growth is prone to winter burn, which can damage the look of your plant for the following year.

Dark gorgeous texture, the Wisconsin Juniper bush (Juniperus horizontalis 'Wisconsin') is an outstanding, low-growing Juniper introduced by the University of Wisconsin. Featuring dark, blue-green summer foliage that has a feathery appearance. It is nicely uniform and full naturally!

In contrast, there is usually a light-colored stripe along the length of the top surface of each needle-like leaf, giving it a unique, two-tone appearance! Wisconsin Juniper's branches are comprised of two opposite, mostly small, scale-like, and tightly appressed leaves at each node of the twig.

Once cold temperatures come around, it stands out with a plum winter color. Widely adaptable throughout USDA planting zones 3 to 8, growing just 4 to 6 inches tall, these low-growers spread to an impressive 4 to 6 feet in width!

Landscape Application:

Wisconsin is great for anchoring areas in the garden! The unique form and tidy growth stand out as a garden workhorse for foundation plantings, facer plants, and as edging lining a walkway or driveways.

Easy and carefree en masse for erosion control on slopes, slowing rainwater runoff, and bringing safety to hard-to-mow hillsides! Groupings, long rows, and masses bring great visual appeal and low-maintenance year-round color and ground-covering beauty.

Pot up in planters or top retaining walls, or included in a mixed shrub border, Wisconsin Junipers are sure to shine in the sun while handling harsher settings in Rock Gardens and Xeric sites!

  • Dark Blue-Green Summer Foliage
  • Plum Winter Color In Cold Weather
  • Low-Growing & Wide Spreading
  • Very Easy To Grow & Low-Maintenance

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Doing amazingly well in full sun, Juniper doesn't mind a little afternoon shade or even city conditions. Those blue-green needles will hold their color just fine until the chill enters the air when they become plum-hued for the winter. Not particular to soil type, any well-drained, sandy soils, even rocky or highly aerated soil will do Junipers just fine. Their bane is wet, soggy soil that will rot their roots. All plants appreciate a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch around the roots all year.

Prune Junipers, if needed to keep their shape in June, after the new growth has time to establish in the late spring. Deer and rabbits usually don’t eat these shrubs unless desperate, and cold winters won't bother these shrubs at all! Give your evergreens a good long drink in the autumn before winter to help prevent winter burn.
