With flowers the scent of grape soda, the Li Jujube Tree (Ziziphus jujuba 'Li') is an interesting plant from China in which the fruit was used in Chinese medicine and healthy snacking! The small and yellow flowers have the interesting fragrance of grape soda!

Flowers typically arrive around June and feed pollinators galore while looking great against the tall, yet narrow-growing form. The deciduous leaves are dark green and glossy and resemble those of a Pear tree!

Li Jujube produces loads of candy-like fruits at a very early age. The fruits (drupe) resemble a small egg in size and are green as they begin to mature in the fall. If eaten fresh and green they will be very crunchy and sweet like an apple with a bit of a syrupy overtone. As the fruits begin to ripen more, they turn a mahogany color and get sweeter as they age. They can be picked at this stage and allowed to wrinkle and dry after picking and should be used as you would dates or raisins

Once established, they are very drought-tolerant as well as insect and disease-free. Li Jujube is self-fruitful and does not need another variety to be productive (and productive they are!). Growing 10-15 feet in width, but 20-40 feet in height, Jujube Trees grow throughout USDA hardiness zones 6 to 10.

Planting and Application:

Jujube are super sweet eaten fresh, preserved, or dried. The wonderful thing about the fruit is they do not ripen all at the same time and can be harvested over a period of a few weeks. They dependently produce great crops of fruit year after year.

A wonderfully ornamental tree, Jujubes are great for your edible landscape along the back of your garden or lot. These trees love hot dry areas in full sun. Jujube can also be trained as low-branched barrier plants as they contain thorns.

These make a beautiful stand-alone single specimen tree that will produce fruit dependably as they do not need a partner to make fruit, so you will love having these great shade trees!

  • Grape Soda Scented Yellow Blooms
  • Fast Growing Height But Narrow Form
  • Sweet Apple-Like Flavored Fruit - Fresh, Dried or Preserved
  • Glossy Green Leaves
  • Beautiful Specimen Fruit Tree, Thorny Hedge & Barrier Plantings

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Try one in a big container in a full sun location. The Jujube, with its smaller glossy leaves and wispy canopy, is quite attractive in a pot or in the ground. This pest and disease-resistant plant can be grown with the foliage to the ground, or as a single or multi-stemmed tree. Keep them 30 feet from water lines, as the roots will seek that water. Prune carefully, wearing gloves, in the early summers to control size, shape, and to keep a canopy open to air circulation.

  • Full Sun Trees
  • Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate Moisture Needs - Drought Tolerant Once Established
  • Prune Early Spring
  • Can Be Kept At Any Height/Size
