Description
Your garden needs jewelry too! Get the Magical® Winter Jewel Winterberry (Ilex verticillata 'Kolmwint') featuring luxuriously green leaves and colorful red gems! Spring brings tiny white blooms and pollinators galore! Deep-green, glossy foliage lasts all summer into fall and is a gleaming backdrop throughout your garden.
Fall frost brings a yellow and purplish blush to the leaves before they drop in fall, then the branches are heavily laden with fiery bright red fruit clusters and are amazing decorations in the garden or in the home for dried holiday décor. Even the glossy leaves are amazing highlights to your winter landscape and your indoor winter tablescapes! You'll adore the bees and birds this shrub brings to your garden too!
Winter Jewel is a female deciduous Holly in the Magical® series and requires a pollinator. Nature Hills recommend the Southern Gentleman. One male plant will pollinate up to 9 or 10 Winter Jewels. Be sure to include a male plant so your Winter Jewel Holly plants will produce an incredible fruit display. But remember that the Southern Gentleman is a much taller plant getting 6-10 feet tall so it should be planted within 30 feet of the smaller female plants it pollinates.
Planting and Application:
A show-off as a privacy hedge and foundation planting, Winter Jewel adds curb appeal and is great for along the roadside to act as a barrier between your front yard and the road to offer your property a wonderful layer of privacy and definition.
Be sure to include these Winter Jewels in high-profile locations in your landscape like entrances and patios, as well as cutting gardens and perennial borders. The berries alone in winter make Winter Jewel the gem among your perennial gardens. Not to mention your cut flower garden will be extended well into winter, and no pollinator garden or bird lover will want to be without this buffet for songbirds!
High-impact color year-round, Winterberry will provide four-season interest as a pruned foundation plant or large anchor for your home's foundation and other planting beds. A stylish, deep-green backdrop of foliage is always welcome to highlight smaller shrubs and perennials.
Their tolerance for soggy soils makes them wonderful for along streams, Rain Gardens, and water features. Plant in low areas, moist wooded edges and where your gutters drain!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Winterberry thrives in native soggy swamps of Northeastern USA and Magical® Winter Jewel reaches a modest size in its USDA growing zones 4 - 9. Loving the full sun and even some part shade, these grow best in average moisture and acidic, clay, or soggy soil. It prefers wet soil but is adaptable to a wide range of conditions. A generous layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill. Winterberry plants are deer resistant, so you won't have to worry about them being decimated by their foraging. Rarely bothered by pests and Winterberry Holly are very disease and Deer-resistant!
- Full Sun or Part Shade (More Sun=More Fruit)
- Moderate Moisture Needs & Tolerant of Wet Sites
- Prune After Flowering
- Deer Seldom Bother It
- 'Southern Gentleman' Male Pollinator
