Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight every day for the best flower production. While it tolerates partial shade, you will notice fewer purple blooms and the stems may begin to stretch or flop as they hunt for more light.
  • Soil: This perennial thrives in well-drained soil and is very forgiving of poor soil quality. If you are dealing with heavy clay that holds moisture, mix in some compost or plant in a slightly raised mound to prevent the roots from rotting in "wet feet."

Watering Requirements

New plants need a deep soak twice a week during their first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once mature, Junior Walker is highly drought tolerant and usually only needs supplemental water during extreme heat waves. If the soil stays bone dry for too long, you might notice the foliage losing its crisp silver-green color or the plant producing smaller flower spikes.

Pruning Tips

Since this plant blooms on new growth, you should shear the entire plant back by half after the first flush of flowers begins to fade in early summer. This "haircut" tidies up the mound and triggers the plant to produce a fresh set of stems and a second round of blossoms for the autumn. In late winter or very early spring, cut all the old stems down to three inches above the ground to clear the way for new spring shoots.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a general-purpose, slow-release fertilizer just once in early spring as the first green leaves appear. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers or over-feeding in late summer, as this creates "soft" growth that makes the plant leggy and weak. Keeping the nutrients at a moderate level ensures the catmint maintains its signature compact, mounded shape rather than splitting open in the middle.
