Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: These sun-loving bulbs need at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight to produce sturdy stems and vibrant yellow pigment. In hotter climates, afternoon shade is helpful to prevent the delicate petals from scorching, though too much shade often leads to floppy stems that require staking.
  • Soil: Aim for a "chocolate cake" consistency: rich, loamy, and crumbly. If you have heavy clay that holds water, mix in organic compost or peat moss to improve drainage, as Freesia bulbs will rot if they sit in soggy "wet feet" conditions.

Watering Requirements

During the first few weeks after planting, keep the soil consistently moist like a wrung-out sponge to wake up the bulbs. Once the plant is actively growing and flowering, water deeply whenever the top inch of soil feels dry. While established Freesias can handle brief dry spells, inconsistent watering usually results in smaller double blooms and scorched leaf tips.

Pruning Tips

Double Blooming Freesias bloom on new growth, so you should only prune once the foliage has completely turned yellow and brittle in late summer. This wait is crucial because the green leaves are like solar panels, gathering energy to store in the bulb for next year's show. Simply snip the spent flower stalks back to the base after fading to keep the plant's energy focused on bulb development rather than seed production.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer or a specific bulb booster when you first see green shoots poking through the soil. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the blooming cycle, as this encourages a growth spurt of soft green leaves at the expense of the fragrant yellow flowers. A second light feeding just as the buds form will help ensure the heavy double petals have the nutrients they need to fully open.

Freesia have captivated our late-spring gardens and excites the senses, and none other than the Double Blooming Yellow Freesia (Freesia x hybrida 'Yellow') brings its buttery sunny yellow double petals to the family!

Adding brilliance to your spring garden, these delicate, glowing flowers are a florist's best friend! They sing out with their bright and bold coloration, and they offer a long-lasting bloom season and an appealing spicy-sweet perfume that will fill the garden or your home indoors when you snip a few blooms for your bouquets.

These buttery Double Freesia are considered summer-flowering bulbs, known as corms, which grow quickly to a 1-2 foot tall clump over time and can spread up to 2 feet wide when planted outside. Warm winter areas throughout USDA growing zones 8 - 10 allow these plants to remain perennial and form clumps of green swords and bright red blooms.

Planting and Application:

These elegant yellow flowers offer a saturated yellow pop to the garden or a floral arrangement. Because numerous buds per stalk open consecutively from base to tip, they have a long-lasting presence! Use them as edging, as groupings, or as cheerful ribbons of sunny color throughout the landscape, the elegant greenery looks great even when not in bloom!

Both in pots or planters or in the garden beds and borders, these bright flowers also pair well with other Freesia varieties and a wide array of colors. Anywhere they go, pollinators follow and you will enjoy spicy-scented blooms for indoor vase arrangements. Plant Double Freesia among later emerging perennials and shrubs that provide shade for these plants from the worst of the summer sun.

Pot up in larger mixed planters or as a solo feature with multiple Freesia clustered together for a beautiful display on sunny porches and patios! These bulbs can be forced indoors and brighten your winter months. Don't forget to give these cheerful yellow Freesia as pretty gifts!

  • Double-Petaled Bright Buttery Yellow Blooms
  • Sweet Peppery Scent & Pollinators Galore!
  • Long Slender Green Foliage Clumps
  • Hardy Perennial Corm or Annual/Seasonal Accent
  • Floral Bouquets, Edging, Containers & Sun Garden Focal Points

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Freesia are fall-planted corms that need full sun locations, but tolerate some afternoon shade in the hottest growing zones and bright indirect light indoors. Any rich, well-drained soil in the ground or in containers works great, as does moderate yet regular moisture. These bulbs despise soggy conditions but appreciate a layer of mulch over the soil surface. Deadhead once the flowers fade and keep the leaves to continue making food for the bulbs. Then trim back the foliage once it yellows after first frost.

Plant Freesia corms in spring about 2 inches deep with the pointed end up, spaced about 6 inches apart. The corms multiply and will naturalize in USDA growing zones 9 and 10. Provide moderate fertility and a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch over the soils surface.

Northern gardeners In USDA planting zones 1-8 can use Freesia as annuals for seasonal container or garden accents, or bring them in for the winter as houseplants. You can also treat these corms as you would Canna and Dahlia, and lift your plants in the fall before a hard frost but after they've gone dormant. Deadhead after flowers fade but keep the leaves so they can make food for the bulb, then trim the leaves down when they turn yellow.
