My new serviceberry plants.

Trees arrived as expected they looked very healthy and they were immediately planted after letting them acclimate for a day.

Letting them acclimate before planting is a great habit, and it sounds like you set them up well from the start. Smokey Serviceberry tends to reward that kind of care. Thanks for sharing the update, Julio, and we hope they put on a good show for you this season.

It's hard to give it a fair assessment as it's only been in the ground a few weeks

It's hard to give it a fair assessment as it's only been in the ground a few weeks. It arrived in beautiful condition, well packed, good size. Now we wait to see if it takes off.

A few weeks is still very early days for a serviceberry. They tend to put energy into root establishment first before you see a lot of top growth, so patience pays off here. Really glad it arrived in good shape. Check back in once it starts putting on new growth this season, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions along the way. The Nature Hills Team

The bushes arrived very healthy looking

The bushes arrived very healthy looking, with leaves open already,. They are fahead of the serviceberry bush I already have in my yard, whose buds are not yet open. They have survived a few frosts since i planted them, wit no damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Smokey Serviceberry considered a fast-growing or slow-growing plant?

  • Smokey Serviceberry is a moderate grower, typically adding 12-18 inches per year once established. While not the fastest option for instant impact, it reaches mature size within 5-7 years. Plan for steady, reliable growth that builds both fruit production and landscape presence over time.

Is Smokey Serviceberry deer resistant?

  • Smokey Serviceberry offers moderate deer resistance, though hungry deer may still browse the foliage and fruit during harsh winters or drought conditions. The dense, multi-stemmed growth habit and tough branches provide some natural protection. For best results in high deer pressure areas, consider fencing young plants until established or shop companion deer-deterrent plants at Nature Hills.

How much care and maintenance does Smokey Serviceberry require once established?

  • Smokey Serviceberry is extremely low-maintenance once established, requiring minimal care beyond occasional pruning. This tough-as-nails shrub stands up to heavy snow loads and harsh winds without losing its shape. Simply prune lightly in late winter to maintain desired size and remove any dead wood.

Will Smokey Serviceberry produce berries and are they edible?

  • Yes, Smokey Serviceberry produces large, dark-purple berries by June or July that are excellent for eating fresh, baking pies, or making preserves. The berries have a complex, nutty flavor with almond notes and a higher flesh-to-seed ratio than wild varieties. Plant yours from Nature Hills for the best fruit-producing serviceberry cultivar available.
