Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Give these roses at least 6 to 8 hours of full, direct sun every day. While they can handle a bit of afternoon shade in hot climates, more sun ensures the most vibrant color transitions and the heaviest flower production.
  • Soil: These roses love rich, loamy soil that drains well, much like a wrung out sponge. If you have heavy clay, mix in some organic compost to improve drainage, or use a raised bed to keep the roots from getting waterlogged.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water your Sunblaze Rainbow deeply twice a week to help the roots dive deep into the soil. Once established, these miniature roses are surprisingly resilient, but inconsistent watering will lead to smaller flowers and scorched leaf edges. Aim to keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy, especially during the heat of midsummer.

Pruning Tips

This rose blooms on new wood, so the best time for a "haircut" is in early spring just as the leaf buds begin to swell. Cut the entire plant back by about one third and remove any thin, twiggy growth to encourage vigorous new stems and a tidier shape. Pruning at this time resets the plant for a fresh explosion of blooms and improves air circulation to keep the foliage healthy.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release rose fertilizer in early spring and again after the first heavy flush of blooms to fuel the next round. Avoid high nitrogen fertilizers after August because this encourages soft, tender growth that can be easily killed by the first winter frost. Think of late season feeding as keeping the plant awake when it should be preparing for its winter nap.

What comes to mind when you think of a Rose? Is it some kind of a hothouse flower, a single long-stemmed red Rose in a cut crystal bud vase?

Let's rethink Roses!

What if you could imagine a spicy, multicolored durable petite Rose that is a heck of a lot more fun? Sunblaze® Rainbow Miniature Rose (Rosa 'Meigenpi') is the very best kind of "good time gal", and definitely not a high-maintenance prima donna.

This is a vigorous Rose bush that grows tiny blooms in a delicious combination of tangerine orange tipped with candy apple red margins and glowing yellow centers. Like a tequila sunrise on a space-saving shrub, these Miniature Roses are covered in sweet and petite double blooms without sacrificing garden space!

Easy care and low maintenance throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 11, they are very well adapted to container use! Rainbow Sunblaze® Miniature Roses grow to a 1-2 foot tall and wide rounded mounding shrub that's perfect for small-scale landscaping!

Planting and Application:

You'll definitely see the parentage of the best-of-breed miniature Roses in this selection. What a fun, easy-breezy choice for summer container gardens, especially on a pool deck or by a front door. If you like to have a good time, meet your Rainbow Rose! Dress them up or down with your choice of container. They hold their own in the most whimsical pot. Go to town!

Line your sunny garden beds with an upright row of these charming little Roses or use them in a sunny mixed border. They would look fantastic paired with contrasting perennials, such as airy white Gaura or bold, strappy Daylilies.

In protected locations in the landscape, smaller pollinator borders and cottage gardens gain a romantic little darling shrub. While large or small gardens are sure to be able to find room to include a few regardless of how established the other plants in them are! Tuck a row along the front of a garden bed as edging, or encircle a sculpture, urn, or other garden embellishments to further highlight them in your landscape!
