Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Give this Spirea at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to maintain its vibrant copper, yellow, and red foliage. While it can survive in partial shade, the "rainbow" colors will fade to a basic green and you will see significantly fewer flowers.
  • Soil: This shrub is adaptable but thrives in well-drained soil that doesn't stay soggy after a rain. If you are working with heavy clay, mix in compost or pine bark to improve drainage and air circulation around the roots.

Watering Requirements

Keep the soil consistently moist during the first growing season to help the root system establish, checking it twice a week. Once established, Rainbow Fizz™ is moderately drought tolerant, though inconsistent watering can lead to leaf scorch and a shorter bloom time.

Pruning Tips

Because this variety blooms on new wood, you should prune it in early spring before new growth begins to emerge. Feel free to shear the plant back by about one-third to improve the shape and encourage vigorous new stems that will hold the flowers. You can also snip off faded flowers in summer to encourage a second flush of blooms later in the season.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release shrub fertilizer in early spring just as green leaves start to appear. Avoid fertilizing after mid-summer, as this pushes soft, new growth that won't have time to harden off before the first frost.

Sparkling and effervescent, the vivid Rainbow Fizz™ Spirea (Spiraea japonica ‘Matgold’) is a fruity little specimen that’s cold-hardy and as sweet as can be! Get ready to be amazed at the everchanging rainbow of colors this little number displays throughout the growing season!

Spring bursts onto the scene with reddish-pink new growth that matures to brilliant lime green! The oval foliage has a delightful toothy edge and is accented by reddish-pink stems! Late spring brings reddish-pink buds that open into fizzy, refreshingly juicy-looking, hot pink flower clusters! These summer blooms are sure to quench the thirst of you and your pollinators!

Easy to grow, Spirea forms a compact and naturally rounded shrub, the blooms smother the entire plant all summer and even into autumn! Fall brings the last color show when those light green leaves become an incredible coppery-red!

Planting and Application:

Rainbow Fizz™ can reach about 3-4 feet tall in height and width. These lovely roundy-moundy bushes lend a playful effect to borders when spaced evenly. Add candy-like colors to children’s gardens, and eye-popping color to mixed-shrub plantings! It’s also incredible eye-candy for Pollinator Garden, while sure to add fresh bright color to modern Cottage gardens as a juicy backdrop plant or specimen

Spirea are fantastic as low privacy and screening shrubs. Plant groupings or use as foundation plants for major curb appeal. We’re sure no one will miss the turn to your house with a row of these planted along the front of your property! Accent your front door plantings with a burst of lime and cherry soda-colored whimsy!

  • Bright Reddish-Pink New Growth & Stems
  • Reddish-Pink Buds & Hot Pink Flower Clusters
  • Major Pollinator Attractor!
  • Lime-Green Foliage & Coppery-Red Fall Color

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Spirea bushes do amazing in full sun, so situate yours in at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. Easy going on other care needs, just provide annual fertilizer, and a moderate, yet consistently moist soil location. Prune in late winter/very early spring, and provide a post-bloom shearing if desired to remove dead blooms and encourage a second flush of flowers.

  • Full Sun
  • Adatable Well-Drained Enriched Soil
  • Moderate Consistent Moisture
  • Low Maintenance
  • Very Cold Hardy
