Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Aim for at least 6 hours of direct sun daily to ensure the strongest stems and most abundant blooms. While it tolerates partial shade (especially in hot southern climates), too much shade often results in floppy stems and fewer flowers.
  • Soil: These plants crave "goldilocks" soil—consistently moist but well-draining. If you have heavy clay, amend it with compost to improve drainage; if you have sandy soil, that same compost will act as a sponge to keep the roots hydrated.

Watering Requirements

Hydrangeas are famous for being thirsty, so keep the soil consistently moist while the plant establishes its root system (the first 6–8 weeks). Once established, it is moderately drought tolerant, but don't test its limits; inconsistent watering causes the leaves to droop and results in smaller, less impressive flower heads.

Pruning Tips

This variety blooms on new wood (growth from the current season), which makes pruning simple and stress-free. In late winter or early spring—before new green leaves appear—cut the stems back by about one-third. Think of this like a haircut that builds muscle; it encourages vigorous new growth that is sturdy enough to hold up those massive blooms without flopping.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, granular fertilizer formulated for flowering shrubs once in early spring as new growth begins. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this encourages weak, leafy growth that won't have time to harden off before winter, potentially causing cold damage.

You won't believe the size of the blooms on the beautiful Incrediball® Blush Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens INCREDIBALL 'NCHA4'). They really do get as big as basketballs! One bloom cluster will fill a big vase! Big toothy and textured green foliage fills out these mid-sized shrubs and creates a picturesque form in the landscape.

The pale pink blooms transform to deep pink in late summer and finally to chartreuse green in the fall. The dried tan blooms last for months on the shrub and longer if cut and dried for inside arrangements all winter. Butterflies drop by for a visit all summer when these are in bloom, adding to their beauty!

Incrediball® Blush is beautiful, but it is also one tough cookie. The flowers are held on long, strong stems that stand up to rain like a champ. So, unlike other Hydrangeas that look wilted and limp after a good summer rain, Incrediball® Blush can take a licking and keep on ticking. These shrubs are resilient, too. They will faithfully bloom for you every year, even after a harsh winter.

Planting and Application:

Incrediball® Blush gets covered in its massive pink flowers, completely eye-catching in the border - or anywhere in your garden for that matter! You'll certainly set your home apart from everyone else in the neighborhood with a couple of these blooming shrubs flanking your driveway or dividing your home's front yard from the sidewalk for low privacy that catches the eye.

Use a row as an impressive foundation planting or backdrop for your other shrubs and perennials, the textured green leaves highlighting not just its own enormous blooms, but everything else as well! They're of course a perfect specimen plant and focal point that keeps its big mopheads throughout the fall and into winter for year-round interest.

  • Pink Blooms As Large As Basketballs
  • Textured Green Toothy Foliage
  • Strong Stems Hold The Big Blossoms Aloft
  • Four Season Interest
  • Easy to Grow Hedge, Specimen & Unique Cut Flower

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Plant in full sun for the strongest stems to help support those large flowers, and to increase how many flowers your plant creates! Smooth Hydrangea bushes bloom on new wood, so prune in the late winter or very early in the spring before they begin to grow. Plant in a well-drained and highly organically enriched soil that remains consistently moist. So use a thick layer of mulch for moisture and insulation.

  • Full Sun
  • Regular Moisture
  • Organically Enriched Well-Drained Soil
  • Prune in Winter or Early Spring
  • Hardy USDA Zones 3-9
