Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: For the most intense dark foliage and vibrant red blooms, plant in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct light. While it can handle partial shade, the purple leaf color will fade to a muddy green and you will see fewer flowers.
  • Soil: This shrub thrives in moist, well drained soil that is rich in organic matter. If you have heavy clay that stays wet, plant it in a slight mound or add compost to the planting hole to improve drainage and prevent root rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, provide about one inch of water per week to help the root system get established in your garden. Once the plant is mature, it is quite adaptable and can handle occasional dry spells, but consistent moisture ensures the most prolific reblooming throughout the summer. If the soil stays bone dry for too long, the plant may drop its leaves or fail to produce a second flush of flowers.

Pruning Tips

Electric Love Weigela blooms primarily on old wood, so the best time to prune is immediately after the first heavy spring flowering is finished. Think of this like a post-bloom haircut where you remove about a third of the oldest branches at the base to encourage fresh, vigorous growth. Pruning at this specific time allows the plant to set new buds for next year while cleaning up the shape for the rest of the season.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring just as new growth begins to appear to fuel the upcoming bloom cycle. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer or early fall, as this encourages soft, tender growth that will not have time to harden off before the first frost. This late season growth is very susceptible to winter kill and can weaken the overall health of the shrub.

Does your garden need some energizing? The Electric Love® Weigela (Weigela x ‘ZR1’) will zap hot fresh color and sulking dark foliage into your landscape without sacrificing cherished space! Carmine red blooms light up the bruised bronzy-purple foliage all summer!

These red tube-shaped blossoms are a hummingbird's dream! You’re sure to see a few flitting about as they sip nectar! You’ll also see swarms of bees and butterflies and hummingbird moths visit throughout the day! The dark foliage and itty-bitty clusters of flowers are a dramatic contrast and sure to add black-tie formality to garden beds and borders of any size!

Electric Love® stays naturally small, only reaching 1-2 feet in height and width at maturity! Ideal container-ready plants, as well as edging and formal landscape barriers. Dress up any garden just like a little black dress with that perfect shade of red lipstick does to a gal's wardrobe!

Planting and Application:

Weigela are magnificent bloomers! Often having repeat blooms after the summer flush, plant these dynamic mini-shrubs as borders to mark the division between lawn and garden beds and borders, add depth to foundation plantings and other border plants as a dramatic facer shrub, or in groupings to add pops of accent color among more brightly colored shrubs and perennials!

Electric Love® is of course perfect for Pollinator and bird-friendly landscapes! Add a jolt of color to tired Perennial and Cottage borders! But a plant of this size is ready-made for container gardening and even gardeners without a garden! Rooftop plantings, porch and patio planters, and balcony gardens can enjoy these electrifying little numbers!

  • Bold Red Blooms
  • Dark Bronzy-Purple to Burgundy Foliage
  • Pollinator & Hummingbirds
  • Summer Blooming Small Compact Shrub
  • Containers, Edging, Small Space Gardening

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Weigela are easy to care for little gems! Provide at least 6 hours of direct light a day, but allow some afternoon shade in the hottest growing zones. Any well-drained, moderately moist soil in the ground or a pot with ample drainage and enriched soil works great!

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Moderate Yet Consistent Moisture & 3-4” Layer of Mulch
  • Cold Hardy & Low Maintenance
  • Prune After Flowering

Electric Love® Weigela is just what your garden needs this year! Energize your beds and borders, or porch and patio planters with fantastic pollinator plants available at NatureHills.com today!
