Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Full sun is essential for the Como Park Shrub Rose, meaning at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily. While it can handle very light afternoon shade, less sun will lead to weaker stems and fewer of those dark pink blossoms.
  • Soil: These roses prefer rich, well-drained soil that feels like a wrung-out sponge. If you have heavy clay, mix in some organic compost to improve drainage, or if your soil is sandy, add peat moss to help hold onto moisture.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, water your rose deeply twice a week to ensure the roots settle into their new home. Once established, this variety is quite resilient, but inconsistent watering can cause the blooms to wilt or drop prematurely. Aim for the base of the plant to keep the leaves dry, which helps prevent spotting and keeps the foliage looking lush.

Pruning Tips

Since the Como Park Rose blooms on new wood, you should prune it in late winter or very early spring before new growth starts. Think of it like a seasonal haircut; cutting the stems back by about one third encourages fresh, vigorous branches that will carry the season's heaviest flower load. This also improves airflow through the center of the shrub, which keeps the plant healthy and vibrant.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release rose fertilizer in early spring as the first leaves emerge and again after the first major flush of blooms. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this encourages soft, tender growth that won't have time to harden off before the first frost. This prevents the "winter kill" that often happens when new stems are caught off guard by freezing temperatures.

Easy Elegance® Como Park Shrub Rose (Rosa EASY ELEGANCE 'BAIark') is a beautifully modern variety of Shrub Rose in the Easy Elegance® Roses series. #ProPlantTips for Care:

Disease-resistant and overall hardy, Como Park Rose is a low-maintenance shrub that won't ask much of you in return for its glorious display. Como Park Roses need good air circulation and lots of sunshine. Look for a planting site that gets morning sun if possible, with at least six or more hours of full sun a day.

Well-drained soil drains quickly after rain, and keeps its root systems healthy. Create a raised bed, or planting mound if you need to improve drainage. Apply a moderate amount of water to keep the soil around your Roses moist. Add a three-inch layer of mulch to cut down on surface evaporation, but pull it back away from directly touching the stems.

Feed them in early spring and mid-summer with a slow-release fertilizer for flowering plants. Read the label for correct application rates. Rake up the fallen leaves in late fall, and bag them up, and remove them from the area. Prune all of the stems down to six inches each year in spring, just after the plants start to wake up.
